opening space...empowerment and motivation

What a challenge, ashley cooper, having to define ones style!
I have offered my strongly held believe (I have has several of those,
if not to say a multitude, shattered in my 35 years of professionally
working with systems) about opening space on this list several times.
Here goes again: the open space-facilitator does not open space. The
space is opened by the sponsor, client, whatever. The facilitator
(me) introduces the open space-technology and slips into the role of
holding time and space during the os event (holding time and space
requires life long practice, is a special style and there is nobody
out there who can tell you with certainty what on earth it is but
many of us are practicing it).
This might be another way of saying that the space is open already
and that this openness is formally announced by the sponsor inviting
the facilitator to focus the group, state the theme, introduce the
principles, invite the issues, announce market to be in session, etc.
I love your questions, come and visit us in Berlin for a session of
the berlin open space cooperative (boscop),

amongst these amazing discussions presently taking place on this list
(for which i deeply borrow and say the word john introduced,
meegwetch.), i would like to ask anyone's opinion on a present
struggle of my own. my question is more of an open space question
than an OS question!

i am a beginning graduate student studying counseling (in route to
play therapy). in our introductory course we must choose one theory
that "defines" our style (that in itself is a little bit scary for me
- why can't i use the good parts of them all!!). these discussions
of motivation and empowerment further challenge me to question how
does one genuinely attempt to open the space for one other person?
to, excuse me for saying it, but empower another to enter their own
space? to help create an environment that allows space for another's
power to grow? any suggestions?!

thanks
ashley cooper
