SV: Improving working conditions/health amongst the staff of a large hospital

Great to have you join, Eva,
my response to Thomas would have been pretty identical!
Years back, before I got in touch with os, I worked for a
hospital-system that asked us to facilitate a yearly event
(Communications Workshop, they called it) involving people from all
of their three hospitals. We encouraged them to always have the
leadership of the hospital system (chief of medicine, chief of
administration and chief of nursing) and have a x-section from each
of the three hospitals (labtechnicians, cleaning staff, nurses,
doctors, administrators). After a couple of years of this (we did
this 5 years in a row), absenteeism dropped, turnover was reduced,
demand for training from people who never had asked for training
before increased, mentoring between the hospitals increased,
"job-trading" was introduced... all things that made the hospital
more successful in the very competitive Berlin market.
Looking back from where I sit now I believe they were tapping into
their open space-nature. Today, I would recommend open space, of
course, but basically the same procedure as the mix of participants
is concerned but would highly recommend to include more of the system
(patients, for instance and relatives or care takers of patients and
organisations that they cooperate with, health insurance people,
people into medical research at the University, building maintenance
people, suppliers, pharma people....well, as much of the elephant
that they can think of).
Some of the "team sessions" or "staff sessions" that they organised
as an outcome of the communications workshops would probably be done
in the open space-mode today (as happened in one of the highschools I
am working in now, where the studentbody-representatives started to
use the os-mode for their regular meetings a year and a half ago)
Have a grand time in Sweden
Greetings from Berlin
michael

Hi Eva.
It is so good to meet you here too! Welcome to this wonderful community, and
thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Regarding the task at hand, we have been talking about a really large
OS-meeting or multiple smaller ones, for a start. One thing is that all 15
000 will probably not be able to come!

Hopefully there will be an interest to go further within the different units
after initiating the process. These issues have to be worked with, at every
unit, of course. The first event(or series) could have the purpose to define
and make the conditions clear for the local work. (more or less define the
question at hand and work out the givens:)

The video idea was that this/these first events could be recorded to get the
message across the whole organization. It would also be a possibility to
show how this marvellous work was done, to bring excitement for the "local"
work. It could be distributed via CD. Video is an increadible media to
spread a message but of course word-of-mouth is probably as good. If a
collegue tells you that she has been part of something really exciting...
Well inviting 300 people from all across all units and levels could probably
spread the idea as good as anything.

Then next step, for those managers who choose to, could be to do local OST´s
to work out working conditions/health on that very unit.
What do you think about that?
Best regards
Thomas

Dear Michael.
Thanks a lot for sharing your experiences. Well I am off for a few days,
opening space. Looking forward to this, "see you later". The possibilities
really are open ended, I am quite excited about this project.

Elena,
I got this mail "in person" but I think that your intention was to the whole
mailing list so I hereby passed it further...

Thomas, and thanks to Eva, who inspired me to write!

I have a very interesting experience, providing Future Search Conference in
Clinic/Hospital #168 in Novosibirsk, with the OS of the third half of the
day after sharing information about past events in global, personal and
'medical' sphares, difining current trends, influencing the development of
healthcare service, and the picture of desired future and common ground for
the group.... but all this can 'evolve' in the OST meeting, so it doesn't
really much matter in case of 'experienced to talk people',

the Healthcare in our country is in SUCH a poor condition, that many people
did not want to come, as they said: we do know what it was, what it is and
... nothing to hope in the future,
The group was a 'cross-section' of all functions, all levels of management
and of all departments, (It could be 60 to 80 people for managing such a
conference, the problem which is not existing in OST meeting)

so they did 6 projects and were so excited, that they don't need to wait for
anybody, that you can not imagine the difference between their faces on the
first day - on Friday afternoon (after a week and the half day of work) -
they were white as their doctor's smocks, and the joyful faces even after
work on the conference on Saterday and half a Sunday... when they solve
several their problems.. with the help of some 'strangers' coming to them
with the new method.

so if you convince your sponsors to organize some big meeting with the
representatives of the whole organization - the only question for me - how
about the principle 1: whoever comes, are the right people, if we want to
'organize' them?

best wishes

elena
novosibirsk,
