Brandeis University



Brandeis University announces a position for a scholar/practitioner to direct a new Master's Program in Intercommunal Coexistence. The program will be housed in the university's International Center for Ethics, Justice and Public Life, and will award a degree from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. This is a five-year, renewable appointment, and will bear the title "Professor of the Practice" or "Research Professor." It will likely be a ten-month/year position.

Concerns for inclusion and the improvement of intergroup relations have deep roots in the history of Brandeis University and find expression throughout the community in courses, fellowship programs, faculty seminars, student organizations and dialogue groups. The new graduate program, as currently envisioned, will serve experienced professionals who work in conflict regions, in the United States and abroad, to facilitate coexistence efforts at the community level. The person hired to fill this position will complete the design for the program and shepherd it through the final stages of university approval. He or she will be responsible for the overall intellectual and administrative direction of the program, generally teaching three courses per year. Candidates should have substantial practical experience working in coexistence efforts, peacebuilding, conflict resolution, reconciliation, mediation or facilitation, or a related field. They should bring knowledge of relevant theory, and, preferably, experience teaching at the university level as well as a record of publications or professional writing.




Responsibilities


The Director of the Master's Program will work in collaboration with the Director of Coexistence Research and International Collaborations and the Chair of the undergraduate program in Peace, Conflict and Coexistence Studies.  Primary responsibilities will include:

. Providing overall intellectual and administrative leadership for the Master's Program, including, initially, guiding the program through the processes of university approval

. Teaching, generally three courses per academic year 

. Advising Master's students and selection of thesis advisors

. Recruiting students to the program

. Designing and implementing strategies to meet tuition/scholarship income requirements for the budget

. Developing and maintaining relationships with international and regional organizations in the coexistence field to facilitate processes of student recruitment and field placement

. Overseeing the development of materials to represent the Master's program in print and electronic form

. Participating in Coexistence Program Coordinating Committee (which also  includes the Director of Outreach and International Collaborations, the Chair of the Undergraduate Program, and the Program Assistant)

. Chairing Master's Program Steering Committee, consisting of faculty members who teach  in the program

. Representing the program in all appropriate university committees and at  conferences and symposia held under the aegis of the International Center for Ethics, Justice and Public Life

. Engaging in practitioner-oriented and scholarly/reflective activities relating to coexistence



Qualifications


. Extensive record of coexistence practice in historically divided communities (i.e. facilitating dialogue, mediating conflicts, promoting reconciliation, etc.) preferably at the community level, preferably including in regions outside of the United States

. Advanced degree in a Social Science or Humanities field; Ph.D. preferred

. Evidence of successful teaching, including of adult professionals

. Experience directing an educational program preferred

. Ability to link the worlds and discourses of scholarship and practice

. Ability to elicit local coexistence-related knowledge and practice in diverse cultural settings

. Publications, including articles, reports, training materials, curricula, etc.

. Broadly interdisciplinary approach to the theory and practice of coexistence, reconciliation, conflict resolution and peacebuilding
