mentioning space invaders

Dear Winston, Koos, and the rest of you,
cant remember ever having referred to space invadors in the 90 +
times I have introduced os-technology to a group.
In training os-facilitators which I have now done some 15 times the
issue is raised by os-facilitators-in-the-making and then, of course,
it is discussed.
There have been very few space-invadors (and even fewer, in fact
none, that really meant harm from where I stood), so its not been a
substantial issue in ongoing practice. But it does seem to occupy me
and others as something that could happen. Why is that?
Marvin Weisbord and Sandra Janoff have designed a training session
under the title "Facilitating the Whole System in the Room" (which,
incidentally, has grown out of the Future Search praxis but is not
limited to fs-facilitation)....I did attend it last year in Oxford
and it will be offered in Berlin in 2003...: it has various elements
that fascinate me and one of them is the practice of "it has nothing
to do with me". That is, people praising me or damning me, or being
indifferent to me are expressing something that in the main has
nothing to do with me. This stance, I am sure, is very helpful for
the rare instances of space invadors making their appearance. Their
activity has nothing to do with me as open space-facilitator. If that
is my approach, dealing with the invasion is maybe not a cinch but
certainly not a huge issue.
In practice more frequently occuring and frustrating issues are
around such items such as is there enough coffee or a room with a
mountain and ocean view.
Greetings from Berlin
michael
PS: Just had a wonderful os next to a beautiful lake near the baltic
port of Lübeck with 26 consultants specialising in participation of
youth and children in matters affecting their life...just 5
hours...16 issues worked...9 action plans agreed on...high
spirits...zero space invadors...shared leadership...and all in the
face of withdrawing public spending on projects for youth and
children and all the frustrating issues and consequences arising out
that trend...5 hours in which people did not change but jointly
discovered new opportunities to revive and deepen their commitment
and work on democratic initiatives in their field...

Hi Winston and all,

I never make reference to space invaders. I think it generates too
much negative energy and I never could think of anything really
useful to say about it. I just deal with it when it comes up (and so
far, I must say it hardly has).

Best wishes,

Koos
