Lisa and all:

I have dealt with the desire for mission, vision etc in a variety of
ways.  One board and an aboriginal community did in all in Open Space.
When the question was the challenges and opportunities for the future of
the organization or community, the participants organized the pieces
they thought needed to be there.  The chief called a session on vision
and strategic directions and came up with a draft while others worked on
more grounded issues, like the water system.

I worked with another senior team that needed to clarify some
directional issues for itself (and demonstrate some things to the
organization) before it decided to open the space.  They required 4 days
of work before they could name the theme and givens in a way that
engaged the staff and excited the organization.
