I haven't used metaphor for "open space", but I have used it in work with both
individuals and groups (reflective coaching with an appreciative perspective).
I find metaphors to be very powerful. My experience is that asking them for
the metaphor works best. For instance it could be: "Does anyone have a
metaphor for the importance of the list of things we've discussed?"

I always assume the wisdom resides within the individual and the group.
They'll have a great metaphor. Then the next time you might use their ideas as
a catalyst for the next group.

Last thing: I stopped using the word "metaphor" and changed it to "image". The
word metaphor can sound like they are in a classroom and tightened people up
in a group, as strange as that may sound.

People who had no "metaphor" for me, immediately had an "image" when asked. I
also give them permission to use dreams, movies, TV programs, or songs as an
aid to coming to their image or metaphor. I've had incredible results with
this.

Good luck!!
