Hi Anne,<br>
<br>
Roberta my wife and I recently viewed a show on TV together (NOVA)
about "sociobiology." And there was this scientist E.O. Wilson. He's
this weird guy that studies ants. And this term "stigmergy" comes up
during the viewing.<br>
<br>
Later, we discuss the topics of ants and signaling. We discuss ants,
signs, signals, symbols and words. Words like "music." We discuss
how some truly great musicians play from pure feel, and cannot
"read" music at all, and may in fact "be illiterate." They play the
instrument using here-and-now sensing, and feelings. They make
amazing sounds.<br>
<br>
How the instrument physically makes sound can be precisely
described. Yet how the musician makes his or her sound cannot. And
we discuss how some people are very good at using the instrument to
make a very specific sound (without being able to clearly explain
how) while others are good at describing in general terms how the
instrument can produce many sounds (without being good at making any
pleasing sounds at all with the instrument.)<br>
<br>
Today we talked about Open Space in light of the word 'stigmergy'
and this show on NOVA, and music. <br>
<br>
And how perhaps Open Space is maybe a kind of instrument. That
produces vibrations. Some folks just know how to play the instrument
to produce very specific, purposeful, pleasing vibrations. Another
set of people can clearly explain how the instrument can produce
arbitrary vibrations. And how maybe some people belong to both
groups, and can play the instrument well, and also clearly explain
how it actually the instrument makes various vibrations.<br>

<div>Re studying self-organization<br>
Thanks all. </div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>Yes HO all IS self-organization.</div>
<div>However i'm not interested in just any kind of self
organization. OST or Opening space is oriented to
facilitating self authorization; ease of emergence; rapid
achievement of flow state and high degree of coherence.
That's my experience gained in a seven year experiment in
using OST to evolve an Open Space Learning Community of
Practice (Spirited Work). </div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>So one thing that pops out for me if one were to research
this, maybe one needs to track a few things:</div>
<div>1. Level of self authorization?</div>
<div>2. Ease of initiating </div>
<div>3. Ease of emergence </div>
<div>4. Level of group flow state?</div>
<div>5. Level of group coherence?</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>Another observation: re using "well-established words".
As an example you gave us "stigmergy", Daniel. Where is
that "well-established"? Except in certain academic fields?
I am a "first follower" Open Spacer (that is literally
true! Since 1989). I have no idea what you're talking
about, i'm sorry to say. So If you're also interested in
influencing and involving users of OST, I would encourage no
professional jargon, if possible. It renders the enterprise
meaningless to an person for whom OST taps into natural
human patterns and ways of collaboration. </div>

<span>Thanks for the steer Patricia, I will look into self
advocacy.</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>I hope I can produce something by the end of summer
that would be very</span><br>
<span>useful for challenges like yours with org
management! (And mean me not</span><br>
<span>writing this all out by hand)</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>Some of the loose ends I have collected so far that
might be relevant</span><br>
<span>(though they might also be rabbit holes)...</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>Some of the general concepts:</span><br>
<span>- 'agile' management... in fact there is agile or
lean *everything* these</span><br>
<span>days... and Kaizen</span><br>
<span><<a moz-do-not-send="true"

<span>and other concepts from software and manufacturing</span><br>
<span>- 'adaptive' leadership, management and everything
else</span><br>
<span>- generative organisation</span><br>

<span>(and</span><br>
<span>thriveability)</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>More specific models:</span><br>
<span>- Holocracy governance model (TEDx video of main
concept</span><br>

<span>Hi Kari</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>We might be thinking more in parallel than aligned.</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>I very much doubt I will submit anything to an
academic journal... I can't</span><br>
<span>imagine many processes less pleasant! Though I
could find parts to spin</span><br>
<span>off into trade journals and the like.</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>But if others are already researching in an aligned
field (are you</span><br>
<span>yourself?) I would be very happy to partner or pass
on anything I produce</span><br>
<span>for publication. Could you imagine a situation like
that?</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>In the context of the rigours and process of
academic research, my own</span><br>
<span>thoughts are closer to a literature review than a
genuine research question.</span><br>

<span>John ? the literature on self organization is
massive, and to be honest a number of years have passed
since I felt myself to be marginally informed. That
said, there are three books that I found to be most
helpful, and all ? to the best of my knowledge ? are
still in print. In historical order they are: ?Order out
of Chaos,? Ilya Prigogine, ?Chaos,? James Gleick, and
?At home in the Universe? Stuart Kauffmann. I would
suggest starting with ?Chaos? ? which is the best
written and pulls together lots of wonderful strands. </span><br>

there is much more there.</span><br>

<span>I've now saved those links to my reference list : )</span><br>

<span>Dear all ~</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>In Not-Two Is Peace Adi Da sometimes lists
self-organizing with self-rightening and self-correcting
in a way that infers these are complementary concepts.
I wonder if in some ways these terms are
interchangeable. I?m thinking about this question
because I recently noticed this statement about the
relationship between systems and self-correction:</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>?Systems self-correct, but when you bypass the
system, as is now the case globally, then the system
cannot correct itself anymore. It is just careening
downhill with a stave shoved in the wheels. It is
inevitable that it is going to self-destruct.?</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>The context for this comment is an essay on
rightening the current global instability, but perhaps
there is something in the essay that may move the more
general conversation about self-organization forward.
This is a brief essay, so I?ll share it in its entirety
here for anyone who might be interested:</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>On Establishing Rules of Participation For A Global
Cooperative Order</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>6.1 Presently, the international community has no
effective way of dealing with geopolitical issues,
because it is fundamentally about ?tribes? in
competition with one another. There is no force that
embodies everybody and that, therefore, can effectively
deal with the system as a whole.</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>6.2 Bits of the system are always confronting one
another. Therefore, those who hold out or want to ?play
it hard? wind up controlling the whole system.</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>6.3 In general, the so-called ?big powers? are
bypassing rules and playing for dominance. But
everybody is playing their part in the ?tribal?
struggle-game, which is not in the interest of
humankind, and it is not survivable.</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>6.4 Rules and accountability are essential for any
system. Any notion that you can bypass such
accountability is a lie in the name of serving some kind
of ?self?-interest. And this disposition is creating
every crisis.</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>6.5 Systems self-correct, but when you bypass the
system, as is now the case globally, then the system
cannot correct itself anymore. It is just careening
downhill with a stave shoved in the wheels. It is
inevitable that it is going to self-destruct.</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>6.6 Therefore, the international power-struggles
have to be replaced by a systems-based order with rules
and limits established. It is only when the system can
represent itself as a totality and keep its rules in
front of everyone that the system can correct itself.</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>6.7 A rational and positive global situation
requires rules for participation, based on global
interdependence and prior unity?rather than being based
on nation-states or other groups engaging in reactive
measures in the face of being provoked or (otherwise)
acting aggressively to extend their influence.</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>6.8 The process for dealing with global realities
should not be merely punitive. Rules for participation
should be established?and then doors would be either
opened or closed, based on whether any given
nation-state or other entity abides by those rules.</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>6.9 Participation should be the one thing everybody
values?not competition, not dominance and victory over
all, but participation in a global system that allows
every nation-state, every human domain, to survive and
enjoy essential well-being and the growth potential and
benefits of participation in the whole.</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>6.10 The rules of participation in the global
community should not be arbitrary, or set up to favor
certain parties over others. The rules of participation
should establish positive and equal participation for
everyone, with no double standards that require some to
obey the rules while others do not.</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>6.11 The Global Cooperative Forum is the system of
everybody-all-at-once reasserting itself and
establishing rules of participation that put all matters
of global business equitably on the table?including
matters of severe chronic conflict, competition for
resources, degradation of the environment and disruption
of weather-patterns, poverty, disease, and so forth.</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>6.12 Right rules of participation will establish an
entirely different principle than nation-state
competitiveness. It will allow humankind as a whole to
become a functioning system?a system to which all
parties get access by fulfilling certain obligations and
responsibilities, which apply everywhere.</span><br>

<span>Artur ... no doubt Gleick missed a beat ... to say
nothing of one of the most critical players in the
emerging understanding of Self Organization. That said,
James is a marvelous writer, and the stories he does
tell are (I think) superbly done. As it happens, I was
personally connected to one or two of them, and his
descriptions and my experience correlate highly. So I
would say read him for what he wrote, and forgive the
rest.</span><br>

<span>Hi people out there,</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>I would also recommend ?Order out of Chaos,? from
Prigogine and Stengers and, also from the same authors:
" "The New Alliance: Metamorphosis of Science". (I don't
know if there is an English translation: as I only find
it in French, Spanish and Italian...). They are both
written by a Physicist and an Anthropologist, but are
written for the lay person. </span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>And, yes, ?At home in the Universe? by Kauffmann is
a must, even if more complex.</span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span></span><br>
<span>I have many doubts about Gleick's book on "Chaos",
as there is not even a single reference to Prigogine. He
is not even mentioned in the entire book. It is like
writing about "The Evolution of the Species" without
referring Darwin... </span><br>

<span></span><br>
<span>John ? the literature on self organization is
massive, and to be honest a number of years have passed
since I felt myself to be marginally informed. That
said, there are three books that I found to be most
helpful, and all ? to the best of my knowledge ? are
still in print. In historical order they are: ?Order out
of Chaos,? Ilya Prigogine, ?Chaos,? James Gleick, and
?At home in the Universe? Stuart Kauffmann. I would
suggest starting with ?Chaos? ? which is the best
written and pulls together lots of wonderful strands. </span><br>
