mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman""><br>
<br>
For the past 6 years, since 2008, we have successfully used
this1-day
conference event meeting design (listed below) to socialize Open
Space in
Greater Boston. One of the design goals is to give people a
taste of OST and
gently introduce them to the concept and format.<br>
<br>
We have done 11 half-day Open Spaces with 175 or more people
participating,
since 2008.<br>
<br>
The AM is what everyone thinks they want: the predictable and
well-understood
conference format, the usual routine, with keynote, breakouts
etc. <br>
<br>
The PM is the canonical Open Space format as described in the
Guide. We do full
proceedings, because we noticed that the Guide has lots to say
about these, and
typical public OST events have weak proceedings... or none at
all. So we
experimented and innovated a little bit....<br>
<br>
Proceedings<br>
<br>
It includes full proceedings. We modify that a little: We have
people who
process the proceedings for the session conveners. This lightens
the load on
the session conveners and makes it more likely that even a
newbie will convene
a session. They remain responsible for seeing that the session
proceedings gets
collected. <br>
<br>
For smaller events, we render the PDF right there, by entering
the text and
pictures of the artifacts (flip chart diagrams etc) <br>
For larger events, we take a picture of the filled-out forms,
send them to a
transcriber we have engaged, and they send back the text in real
time during
the event. The event ends and within 12 hours we can get the PDF
into
everyone's inbox. 90% of the woerk is done when the Open Space
ends. Then we
drink martinis. And to the rest the next day.<br>
<br>
Multiple Exit Points<br>
<br>
One aspect of the 1-day design is what we call "multiple opt-out
exit
points": people new to Open Space might NOT be comfortable with
it as
described in print. So we provide explicit messaging in the
promo, like this:<br>
<br>
"Open Space in the afternoon..after a great lunch..."<br>
"You do not have to do anything at all during the opening. You
can just
sit quietly and observe it."<br>
"...if you do like it, you can participate for awhile, and even
then,
leave anytime you want...."<br>
<br>
So the thinking of new participants might be....<br>
<br>
"...I'm going to the event to hear from the AM speakers. The
lunch is
free, so I stay for that..."<br>
"...This Open Space thing..hmm...it says I can observe the
opening without
having to do anything, maybe I'll do that...sit in the
back....and bailout if
it's not my cup of tea....if I stay, I can still play passive,
and exit
anytime....hmmm..."<br>
<br>
The basic idea is to invite people into it. We do that by
providing multiple
opt-out exit points. Easy. We do messaging that makes it plain
you can watch
the opening and decide for yourself if you want to stay or go.
Etc...<br>
<br>
They usually all stay. All day. They get to the opening and once
they are
there, they usually go all the way. Many newbies end up
convening sessions!<br>

Hi Dan,
<div><br>
</div>
<div>I'm curious. Why not hold both days - the whole magilla - in
Open Space? </div>

</div>
<div>"This year, <span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255,

people...as many as possible..." seems like it's saying you
want to give everyone a deep dive into the OS experience, but
then you only devote half of the event to it. And it's the
half *after* you've alerted folks to the special speakers -
which subtly sets them up as more deserving of attention than
whomever else might show up. </span></div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>I get a mixed message about Open Space when I see this
format. </div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>To be fair, I'm leading an Open Space in two weeks at a
conference for a group of software architects, mostly giving
them an easily identifiable space to bail out of sessions, use
the law of two feet, and talk about the stuff they want to talk
about. OTOH, I have no illusions that it will give them a full
exposure or experience of the potential power of Open Space, as
when there's really something at stake. Though there's still no
telling what might happen, the conference organizers aren't
expecting more. </div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>To get closer to OS's powerful, passionate potential, I help
to organize Agile Open Northwest and other Agile Opens -
conferences that are all OS all the time with every participant
as special and priceless as the next. </div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>Agile's emphasis on self-organizing teams and OS reliance on
the human drive to self-organize seem like such a natural fit.
I'm curious why you've chosen this format. </div>

The tickets are very inexpensive, from $200 to $320 for a

<br>
...the 2014 event is still very much under construction,
and if you want, you can play a large role in the shape of
the event overall!<br>

<div align="center"><b> agile CULTURE Conference 2014</b><br>

Day1 is designed as 15 total speaking slots, some of
very short duration. The intent here is to introduce a
numerous, rich and varied set of thinkers and ideas into
the opening of the conference on Day1....and mix those
ideas...and set the stage for a much deeper dive into
culture & community, with a full-day Open Space on
Day2. <br>

<br>
We plan to announce more exiting speakers in the next 10
days...and more than a few surprises!<br>
<br>
There are still a few speaking slots open if you have
something big to say about culture. If you have culture
design/redesign tools like meeting formats, social system
designs, facilitation and related tools for designing
cultures for teams, organizations and enterprises, we want
to hear from you!<br>
<br>
<br>
<b>The Open Space Story-Behind-the-Story</b><br>
<br>
In many ways, OST is the star of the event, the primary
culture-tool to explore, and an important area of focus
for the event. <br>
<br>
One of the intentions of the conference is to actively
socialize Open Space into organizations that are trying to
cope with the relentless pace of change. We are looking
for OST people with deep experience to participate, and
teach and socialize Open Space to across the 2 days. Most
of the attendees are managers, directors, VP, and C-level
people from a typical workplace culture. These attendees
are interested in improvement, and know very little about
Open Space. This event is designed to change that!<br>
<br>
The primary task of the event is to put practical tools
for shaping culture... tools like Open Space... into the
hands of the people who need them most.<br>
<br>
How you choose to participate is up to you...if you are <u><b>hot</b></u>
to offer a session on Day1, we want to hear from you!<br>
<br>
The single rule for the 15 speakers on Day1 is that they
must be present during the entire Day2 Open Space in some
way, and be present at the closing circle. The intent here
is to create a valuable and rich social learning
experience for attendees, who want to socialize with the
speakers, book authors and thought leaders at the
conference. The focus is on practical tools company
leaders can use to design, and redesign intentional
culture designs at work. The intent is to showcase Open
Space as perhaps THE most essential tool available for
creating genuine progress in organizations. <br>
<br>
We at Agile Boston hereby invite you to come and
play...and to consider what this conference may mean to
you, and how you may choose to participate. The space
holds about 150 people.<br>
