<div dir="ltr"><div><div>Dan, You are moving at the speed of light and I love it! <br><br>Though part of me is in the mode of "go slow" to "go fast". That's how I feel about Open Space and why I've imagined such a powerful connection between our communities -- Open Space (go slow) and Agile (go fast in an efficient, collaborative sort of way) . <br>
<br></div>When we invite people around an important issue that they care about, opening time and space for them to self-organize, it's as if time slows down and expands. It's so precious -- precious in the way we connect to ourselves and what we are truly passionate about, that we want to take responsibility for and precious in how we connect to each other, celebrating differences and where we are the same. <br>
<br>Now of course, I don't mean that Open Space is slow no more than I feel
that Agile is totally fast. I just feel there is a complementary
essence to each which I've been attracted to for quite a while. And the
more I dig, the more I feel that way. <br><br></div>So Dan I applaud what you are inviting.<br><div><div><div><br>As a French Canadian born, in Quebec city no less, I'd love to hop on a plane and join you. Somehow just as you sparkled in Paris, I have a feeling it will be the same in "la belle province de Quebec". <br>
I need to reiterate to all the fine OST people here: I hear you
about genuine and authentically open space. <br>
<br>
Please understand that well-meaning leaders are often party to
close-space, mandated-practice Agile adoptions. This gap is a very
wide one we are just starting to close, by raising awareness. Open
Agile Adoption is the 1st step, a means to an end. It *introduces*
the open-space concept to an enterprise, often for the very first
time. <br>
<br>
We are just getting started! <br>
<br>
Know and understand that as a result of reflecting on your great
feedback, I am adding new and explicit language in the Open Agile
Adoption (OAA) handbook and related documents. This language
cautions those using OAA to refrain from (and in fact completely
avoid) using OAA to: persuade, manipulate or control anyone, to do
anything, ever. "Persuasion" never was, is not, and never will be
part of Open Agile Adoption. Period.<br>
<br>
While I am sure some may unintentionally or otherwise attempt to use
OAA in this way, no one who reads the handbook and supporting
documents will be able to plead ignorance of the facts, after this
explicit language is added.<br>
<br>
I am planning to road-test the message and the explicit language
(prohibiting attempts at persuasion) in the Quebec City keynote.<div><div class="h5"><br>

<br>
For typical organizations looking to improve,
Agile is a very large process & culture
change. Agile is typically implemented as a
mandate, complete with prescribed practices.
This very standard approach of introducing and
then mandating Agile practices is over 13
years old and is not getting fantastic
results. If it was, we would be able to point
thousands of stories about lasting success
with Agile.<br>
<br>
Open Agile Adoption is a new approach for
Agile adoption. It's focused on people, then
practices. It replaces the mandate with an
invitation. It incorporates Open Space,
leadership storytelling, passage rites and
more, in service to better Agile adoptions.

facilitator for the 1st OS is external
to the organization (neutral as oppose
to an on-going 'coach'), why can that
person not also facilitate the 2nd

idea to pass on the learning of opening
space to someone internal if they can
play comfortably that neutral role among
their peers.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Q. the question I
have is about roles.<span> </span>reading
the <a href="http://scrum.org" target="_blank">scrum.org</a> site, i
see different trainings for different
roles. it would be helpful to get a
sort of program, cuz i can't tell the
players without a program. there are a
bunch of folks sitting at computers,
writing code, cobbling code, etc.
there's some project owner. there are
users. and some others in between.
would help to know something about
sizes of groups, training required for
different roles, languages used, and
these sorts of details.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span> </span></p>

Q. I struggle with the notion that
“agile has become <b>mainstream</b>,
while at the same time has a “85%

seems like folly - why would any company
want to adopt agile with such a poor
track record?<br>

In the case of OAA where there has
already been an attempt to adopt agile
(rescuing an adoptation), training in
agile (scrum etc) will already have
taken place, but in the case where a
unit goes straight into agile via OAA
(straight adaptation), when does the
training take place? Before the first
Open Space, or between the two OS event

I was a little perplexed by the comment
you made on OSList about there being
more ways to fail with Open Space in
agile adoptions than to succeed, this
seems to put OST on a danger list. Put
differently, it seemed to suggest that
there is just one right way to run OST

wrong ways – what is not clear to me is
what is that right way?<br>

At the last teleconference we also
established that the follow up after the
first OST event is critical for success
– but how will the follow through be
run, and more importantly who will be
responsible for this follow up? (If it
is the OST facilitator then I would have
doubts as to whether OST facilitators
who are not also agile experts are
really suitable for OAA.)<br>

If agile adoptions fail because they are
mandated by senior management, and if we
manage to turn this around with your
suggested OAA approach using OST, this
will surely also involve a certain
degree of transformation within senior

a new kind of resistance at the top).
