Two or three years ago, there was an opportunity to host an Open Space at the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg, FL with students, faculty and community leaders -- 75 to 80 people with only 75 minutes alotted. The Topic: <b>Creating a Sustainable Tampa Bay.</b><br>
<br></div>We decided to split the group in two - two rooms; our facilitator instructions bare minimum; one juicy round of discussions; used integral flip chart notes on the news wall for the briefing book which we later photographed. This single event then turned into round 2 and round 3 in subsequent weeks (each 75 minutes -- the class time period with everyone together). <br>
<br></div>Our last session in Open Space became an action session with priority setting. Many great initiatives one of which is that students wanted a place to congregate, to be together -- a cafeteria or something. A few years later, this initiative became a beautiful 81,000 square-foot University Student Center with a ballroom,
dining facilities, meeting rooms, outdoor verandas and a six-story
residence hall. The residence hall accommodates nearly 200 residents
in two-person bedrooms. The ballroom and meeting spaces are
available for public rental and conferences. Here is the <a href="http://www.authorstream.com/Presentation/daigle_Suzanne-268460-usf-sp-wheatley-leadership-series-connection-parners-education-ppt-powerpoint/" target="_blank">book of proceedings</a> of this 7-week event. Lots of pictures that give you a flavor of what can happen in 75 or 90 minutes. <br>
<br></div><b>Remarkably, this is where we are hosting the World Open Space on Open Space in May 2013.</b> I remember asking many folks on our OS list about the wisdom of facilitating an Open Space with so little time. Just as you are doing now Chris. What got invented was worth every second! Today, I celebrate because many of these students, faculty and community leaders will be hosting the world at the May Open Space and this Saturday we are expecting about 100 people at an Open Space event titled : "Sustainability beyond Borders". It is a seeding event for May. We are so excited!<br>

Last year at the height of the Occupy gatherings, we brought 130<br>
people together for a two hour evening. I did a 30 minute opening, we<br>
had two 30 minute sessions for 24 topics, and used the final 30<br>
minutes for report-backs from the convenors of the topics, focused on<br>
what ideas or plans they are taking 'out of the room'. It was a very<br>
high energy gathering. Of course we wish we devoted a day or more.<br>
<br>
Because of the size of the church hall and the fact that some<br>
breakouts were in another building, I felt ok about designing for two<br>
sessions instead of trying three. For example I noticed elders taking<br>
their time moving from place to place. However, if there were well<br>
over 30 topics I can see that would have been a spatial challenge to<br>
work with.<br>
