<div class="gmail_extra">Hi OSListers<br><br>I am coming in late on a topic four days ago and noticed that Barbera Bunker mentioned Focus Groups.<br><br>As Michael Caine often said: "not many people know this," but I believe focus groups were the creation of psychoanalysts using Freudian principles at the behest of Edward Bernier (sic), Freud's nephew, who created the public relations industry in the early part of the 20th century.<br>
<br>Bernier (sic) used focus groups to direct the advertising industry into manipulating consumers into buying products from the emerging corporate sector producing a cornucopia of goods. Interestingly, the focus group movement spread into politics during the first Clinton campaign, which Philip Gould, an Australian consultant to New Labour in the UK, participated and then presented to Tony Blair, who used focus groups to formulate government policy after beating Margaret Thatcher in 1997.<br>
<br>If anyone is interested, this whole story is told in Adam Curtis's excellent documentary THE CENTURY OF THE SELF, which can be found in all its four parts on YOU TUBE. However, be warned it's a four hour trip.<br>

compromised - except for the continuing loss of neuronal patterns. Artur - I<br>
Love you! And I was JOKING! Horrible American habit. We say one thing - and<br>
mean totally the opposite. How weird is that? And a lesson for myself - This<br>
is a GLOBAL COMMUNITY, in which we all appear as we are, dressed in our<br>
cultural drag (.another bad American saying) - and we totally need to<br>
understand that others may not understand us in the way we intended. And<br>
isn't that sad/wonderful? Just another day in Open Space.<br>

Someone is confused! "Research methods" are things like lab research, field<br>
research, qualitative research, unobtrusive methods i.e. ways of collecting<br>
data<br>
to study behavior.<br>
<br>
Focus groups, Delphi, and yes, even Open Space are methods used for specific<br>
purposes in organizations (and elsewhere). They are not research methods.<br>
And<br>
yes, there has been research employing focus groups, Delphi, etc in order to<br>
study some behavior or outcome.<br>
<br>
It's may be difficult to create a good research study using Open Space but I<br>
imagine it may already exist or could be done. B3<br>

Someone is confused!? "Research methods" are things like lab research, field<br>
research, qualitative research, unobtrusive methods i.e. ways of collecting data<br>
to study behavior.<br>

Focus groups, Delphi, and yes, even Open Space are methods used for specific<br>
purposes in organizations (and elsewhere). They are not research methods.? And<br>
yes, there has been research employing focus groups, Delphi, etc in order to<br>
study some behavior or outcome.<br>

It's may be difficult to create a good research study using Open Space but I<br>
imagine it may already exist or could be done.? B3<br>

Josse Bass (publisher) is doing a new book and they asked me to contribute a<br>
