Nobody realized the meaning of snafu and I always thought that some of the GIs that hung around Berlin after leaving the military created it...that turned out to be a rumor. As I remember there was a politically more correct version of snafu: situation normal all fouled up.<br>

I first encountered foo and bar as names for variables in my first LISP<br>
programming classes back at MIT in 1980. I only learned years later that<br>
it was derived from FUBAR. The last time I looked up this acronym there<br>
were some who disputed the etymology as coming from the military - which<br>
I though was ridiculous - it seemed perfect military gallows humor. But<br>
that seems to have been worked out given the reference to a 1944 U.S.<br>
Army animated short directed by Fritz Freleng including characters named<br>
Snafu, Tarfu, and Fubar. (Situation Normal All F***ed Up, Things Are<br>
Really F***ed Up, Totally And Royally F***ed Up).<br>

Scatology aside - the first private invitation only Friends of O'Reilly<br>
in 2004 was an Open Space without the facilitation - they just gave<br>
folks a grid of times and places to fill in. It was held on the lawn and<br>
many of the attendees camped out on O'Reilly's corporate headquarter's<br>
lawn in Sebastopol, California. It made such a dramatic impact on the<br>
computer and publishing industries that it was copied by people in the<br>
Bay Area who didn't get invited and wanted to take advantage of the<br>
spacious dynamic format. They called it BarCamp - an obvious name for<br>
geeks as a complement to FooCamp. A "backcronym" for the event, invented<br>
after the fact, is "Bay Area Rejects". Har har! The BarCamp spread<br>
beyond tech into arts, law, real estate, and more, and are held around<br>
the world. But it's like a bad copy of OST - but has made an impact.<br>

I think both are an inside joke in computing circles, particularly those of<br>
the linux/unix flavors. They will often use example names of files and<br>
applications that have the word foobar in the title. To translate to Windows<br>
users, it might be something like, "To do X, first execute the foobar.exe<br>
file, then...."<br>

Harold I would presume can give you the more juicy details, but I wanted to<br>
demonstrate to all that I had run into the term before, although that and $2<br>
will get you a cup of coffee....<grin><br>

Inspired originally by O'Reilly's FooCamp and the spinoff BarCamp until<br>
Kaliya Hamlin educated me about Open Space Technology. I eventually<br>
learned OST was the pure lineage from which sprang BarCamp. So though we<br>
use the BarCamp title, I launched it straight from the OST manual back<br>
in 2008 after I took Lisa Heft's awesome training.<br>
<br>
We're in our fifth year. It's a conversation between artists, techies,<br>
and people who want to make the world better (change agents).<br>
<br>
Inspired by the awesome work Peggy Holman has done with the Journalism<br>
That Matters conferences - we start with warm up talks. We now call them<br>
"Lightning Keynotes" so we can attract bigger names with giving them the<br>
"bully pulpit" for a short time - and they usually stay and get involved<br>
in the Open Space as well. We've partnered with IgniteMissoula - so we<br>
also opened up for some community submitted 5 minute talks. I'm excited<br>
that OSList member and fellow JTM-er Sono Hashisaki will be one of those<br>
Lightning Keynotes.<br>

This is our fifth year - and it's exciting to see it happening in a<br>
beautiful facility - the Native American Center - a gorgeous new<br>
building with a circular lobby that seems built for Open Space. The<br>
University of Montana president will kick us off. I'm very much excited<br>
- and deeply grateful to all the support I've received from this<br>
community over the years.<br>
