<div>I am currently on a convention planning committee for an event held every year by a local trade association. I agreed to participate on this committee because I saw attendance decreasing every year (400 of the 4800 member showed up last year).</div>

<div>The format has not changed from "talking heads" and trade show . . . is dull . . . and not what the membership wants . . . It's "the way things have always been done" and it's not working.</div>

<div>Yet I have heard from others who have gone before me (attempted to effect constructive change) that the "administration" has set the agenda and is not interested in changing the format.</div>

<div>Any rational person would run away from this quagmire . . . I, however, have a personal interest/investment in making this event productive for all attendees . . . AND we need to do what Jon needs to do - have a "valid" reason for people to show up . . . to create a larger draw of participants.</div>

<div>Here's what I'm doing . . . I'll let the convention be what it is - then the day after - and independent from the association in a nearby location, I am offering a day in Open Space with a provocative theme. the cost will be covered by Vendor sponsorship.<br>
<br>My suspicion is that the results of this "free" add-on to the convention experience this year will be a catalyst for change of future conventions.</div>

It should also come as a non-surprise to learn that when “the inmates” were introduced to open space, their performance was outstanding. Blew your socks off! As for the CEO – he survived. As a matter of fact, when last heard from he was laughing all the way to the bank to deposit the profits from the renewed innovation and creativity.</span><span style="COLOR: black"></span></p>

I would add one of my typically esoteric points, which is about finding a way to be explicit about facsimile engagement which colludes with the starting nervousness and self-limits the experience and conclusions/perceptions of what OS is about...I feel it really is better to say "of course this is not the real thing/we are not doing the real thing because ...." and as one can expect a belated "but we could hack that/why did you under estimate us?" I embolden myself earlier on to push against the timorous prologue with the client....<br>
