I think the simple answer (and maybe even the right one)
is just to keep the space open. It is not sufficient to open space (as in do an
Open Space event), powerful and effective as that may be. The real issue is
keeping it open in a continuing and ongoing fashion. Practically this could mean
doing iterative Open Space events as needed. Every time the environment changes
significantly, creating new issues and opportunities, Open Space. One need not
have the whole organization and all the stakeholder present -- just those who
care. And for sure it doesn't have to be a multi-$$$ offsite -- any open floor
space will do.

Peggy:

Thanks for the response. I was wondering if
you were out there somewhere.
I was about to respond to several of the
other e-mails on their thoughts on
Strategic Planning, all of which were
good. I was/am about to push on
those comments a little
further. One of the curious observations to me was
that some
responded to the question/comment about Strategic Planning, but
you are the
only response I have received on the "emerging order" part of
the
question. That is curious to me, and maybe even more deeply
confirms
what I am struggling with as it relates to Strategic
Planning--

Yes, we need to think about the future in a somewhat
systematic way. And as
Harrison stated, when we think and plan for
the future, it is an imprecise
map. (or something like that). But
according to my experience and my guts
(I know this is a broad, sweeping
statement), the way we do it depends too
much on the rational, makes
assumptions, and makes the process lack depth
and soul. The
best approach as one person said was to get the whole system
in the room,
with which I agree, but even that can get stuck. (And yes, if
it happens,
maybe it needs to). So how to do Strategic Planning in a manner
that
integrates the depths of people, the entire system, and the world,
honoring
all parts of the psyche, not just one part? How to create a
space
so the insight into the futures can emerge or the emerging order can
show
itself is key as I understand
it.

Thanks,
Craig

Thanks for your
