size=2>Hi

As a contribution towards research and
documentation of
open space, Open Futures is
pleased to announce that the story of a
community
event held in Nairn, the Scottish Highlands, on
September 4,
2004 is included in SCOTLAND 2020, a
book by DEMOS, the London based think
tank.

Launched last night in Edinburgh by George Reid,
Presiding
Officer, the Scottish Parliament before
an audience of 120 invited guests,
the open space
event at Nairn was mentioned frequently. In
fact,
the book acknowledges that "Nairn Day was
the defining event of the project
(to look at
Scotland's future in 2020.)"

The book also states that
"Nairn Day was an
experiment in local democracy that focused
on
participation rather than consultation ... The
fact that over 70
people turned out to a meeting
with no real agenda and certainly no
influence
over decision-making is, we think, evidence of an
appetite for
deliberation over long-term issues."

If you are interested in obtaining
a copy of this
book (£10.00, ISBN 1 84180 138 0)which includes a
chapter
on the Nairn event facilitated by Eddie
Palmer and Maggie Havergal, you can
order the
book from DEMOS by emailing
