<P>I was interested to read your description of Open space in te reo Maori. I have been playing around with Maori concepts and words for some time and one of the things I and others I have talked with reckon is that the Marae Atea - the open space outside the Whare nui or Whare puni (Maori Meeting House) and infact the whole Marae complex is a great metaphor for OST.</P>
<P>The process that takes place at times of welcome is very formal in structure and yet people bring the topics they are passionate about to the forum - lay them down infront of every one - there are no parameters here around time (and only the Men are allowed to talk -mmm) to put forward your topic - Anyway after that formality the topics laid down at the welcome are discussed or not by whoever wants to and the rest go off and do what they want to do and so it flows.</P>
<P>A group of us had fun with the the rule and principles too but the only one I can remember is:</P>
<P>When it starts is the right time and we though Watea Atea would be great for that (time open).</P>
<P>I have not done anything formally with OST for ages. I am focusing on getting my Masters but it is always in the back of my mind and the work has informed my study so all is not lost.<BR></P></DIV>

<DIV></DIV>From my travels to New Zealand in March came a small Maori OST practice
<DIV></DIV>group in Nelson, at the top of the south island. A couple of friends
<DIV></DIV>there are working on a Maori translation for the Openspaceworld.org
<DIV></DIV>site, and as a start my friend Kiley Nepia has coined a Maori
<DIV></DIV>translation for "Open Space Technology" along with a proverb. Kiley writes:

<DIV></DIV>"I have made up a translation of the word open space technology which is TE PUNA ATEA KORERO. PUNA is like a pond or pool, fountain eg puna matuaranga fountain of knowledge. ATEA means space and comes from the concept of marae atea which is the forecourt in front of the meeting place this is where discussion takes place. Korero means to speak have dialogue etc te puna atea korero is a pool which gives people unlimited space and movement to come together to discuss things. The other reason I choose the word Puna is that it suggests that's it is fluid and not rigid. The whakatauki or proverb I offer is

<DIV></DIV>The marae is the community lands on which the Maori meeting hous is located. Marae protocol is very formal, but a great deal happens on the forecourt of the meeting house, gatherings that resemble Open Space meetings in many ways. When I was there, this is what people most often referred to when talking about the parallels betwen OST meetings and Maori hui (meetings).
