I have rarely used warmups, but at a recent Open Space involving native
and non-native participants around development of a paleo-indian site,
the use of rocks from the site, suitably smudged and replaced, was of
great use. Participants did not know each other, participated in
the smudging, walked to the rocks in the center of the circle, let one
chose them (!), and introduced themselves to others around the circle
through the rock. The rocks also became a central theme in
discussions.

I think, maybe, the deeper issue in all this conversation about
"warm-ups" is about ritual. Open Space, at least as i
tend to do it, is rich in ritual. Walking (bounding) the circle, reciting
the Law etc... It is short and relevant. I think. Most warm-ups are also
ritual, but may not very relevant -- and therefore referred to as
"games" -- even as a High Mass seems like a large game to folks
for whom it is not relevant. So maybe the principle might be something
like "Use the appropriate, relevant ritual, but as little as you can
decently get away with." ie "think of one more thing not to
do...
As for "smudging" in a First Nation environment -- what else
would you do???
