Dear Gerardo,
thanks for your way of introducting the Law.
Would love to read more variations on this!
Here is how I used to do it:
"Then there is a law, also called the law of mobility or the law of two
feet: "I honor a group with my absence when I neither learn nor
contribute anything."
If I learn something, I stay; if I contribute something, too. But if
neither is the case then I do the group and especially myself a favor by
taking my two feet and moving somewhere else where it is more productive
- or take a nap.
You know this from people who are in groups: you sit together and then
you notice that someone shuts his eyes a bit. And it becomes clear that
this person is no longer quite present. And it would be a good idea for
this person to go away anyway. As soon as the person starts snoring, you
know he has missed the opportunity to leave.
Ok, make sure that when you neither learn nor contribute something: look
for another place.
This law of two feet has several tempting advantages: One is that I am
always somewhere where it is productive and interesting. The other: It
is a wonderful medicine for know-it-alls, all-rounders, long-term
speakers ... when one after another disappears and he sits there alone.
And then there are two appearances, created by this law: bumblebees and
butterflies ...."
Since 2012 I have not introduced ost at a gathering. Probably I would
shorten it, leave something unsaid. What I would certainly still do, is
to walk the circle and look into everyones face... I am pretty sure,
that what I do aside from speaking is essential to introducing...
