Greetings,

Regarding the inquiry:   Examples of successful OS-outcomes where the
interests and
      needs of the participants were very contrary (Catherine Pfaehler)

I have some feedback we hope is helpful.

In the politically divided state of Colorado, USA we have had numerous Open
Space interventions, over the last 28 years in the legislative arena where
contrary interests thrive in the pursuit to kill the political careers of
those who face you in the Circle...  So this is a great question, in
essence, how to avoid the circular firing squad and end up with win-win
results that will hold up over time?

We engaged the entire political body of Colorado in the early 1990's with
Smart Growth summits.  We used OST in the legislative process among
government membership lobbying organizations; in educational reform at both
the local and state levels; criminal justice reform; even community master
planning and development.  It has all held up over time.

It is important to get off on the right foot of course.  In your case, you
are heading in a perfect direction with intent for the Leadership and
Decision Maker group announcing up front that they want to listen to the
stakeholders, first.  Before making final decisions.  Secondly, it is
important to have tried and true procedures for the deliberative and
decision making process to follow.  The legislative process works well
because there are standing committees, right, and other formal bodies that
must be consulted for their decision in the end.  It is important to direct
participants to the process they will follow for the implementation of
decision making procedure formalized already in the lawmaking and sausage
making session.  In educational reform, the school board convened numerous
public hearings to hear presentations from the champions of issues and
opportunities from OST in their procedures to decide which ideas and
improvements make the cut.  And in the formal decision making process in
the political arena especially, there are always cuts made to the great
ideas, right? or it would be easy.  Finally, it is most important of all
for the leadership to stay true to the OST process and let everyone know
their ideas are valid while encouraging the best ideas and win-win
solutions to be proposed, in this first, most important step of the
decision making process.
