[OSList] More Online OST in written form - is it possible?

Anna:

It was indeed an interesting experiment, and quite neat to see how the
conversation flowed from this list serve to the Google doc and now perhaps
back here. And maybe it wants to go somewhere else next? For example, is it
time for a synchronous (live) iteration, such as a conference call or group
video chat? Or another Google doc, where we try to improve on our process
while deepening the conversation itself?

An aside: when I invited the OS community to initiate parallel virtual
conversations as part of WOSonOS 2013 (either in asynch form, or live via
self-organized conference calls, etc.) I had a feeling there might not be
many takers. As it turned out, this was indeed the only such conversation.
Perhaps that speaks to the ease of convening via asynch, or maybe the right
timing of this being on the list serve as we headed to WOSonOS plus the
participation of someone like Lucas, who is often a pioneer in the area of
tech and dialogue. Indeed, he was the first person to get me hooked on
Google docs back in late 2010, when we collaborated on a virtual dialogue
with Tom Atlee about his idea for a new initiative called "American Citizens
Engaged."

Re your difficulties tracking the conversation on the doc, I addressed this
challenge on there as well (near the very bottom) when I noted that a Google
doc "is a wonderfully flexible, Open Space-like platform. A true blank
slate. So unlike a forum, for example, it isn’t automatically doing some
things that we might like and it is up to us to take responsibility for
whatever structure emerges." I then asked "what practices/protocols might we
develop?" Here was my initial list:

--A common way of showing who is writing (e.g. each choosing a color and
indicating that at the top of the doc)

--A common way of indicating a main post and a series of replies.

--some way to know when and where the newest additions to the document are

--color coding via highlighting to indicate various kinds of energy, e.g.
inspiration, concerns, offerings, requests

--what else?

Other platforms offer a different balance of flexibility and structure.
Hackpad is one I am particularly fond of these days, as it automatically
displays who has typed what, and also makes it very easy to create
subsidiary pages where the dialogue can branch off.

By the way, the link you shared didn't seem complete when I cut and pasted
it. Here it is again:

THANK YOU Eiwor, Lucas, Kari, Ben ad others for your input!!! Not least
thank you, Lucas for starting the Google Dox discussion. Great
Conversation!!! It has given me some input and I wish it could continue!!!

It also shows some of the weaknesses of the written asynchronous form: I've
been away for the past days and have therefore not been able to be part of
the conversation that I initiated and that someone else - thankfully - took
further.

I also find the Google dox format rather confusing because I can't see who
is writing (apart from Ben who has been fantastic at adding his name to his
comments), and because, as someone also mentions at the bottom of the page,
it is difficult to see what has been added and it becomes a bit confusing.

The confusion bit may be impossible to avoid entirely in a written
conversation. But I'll have a look at the Hackpad to see if that would cause
less confusion.

Of course, as the last person wrote, written OST is not "OST" as such. It
doesn't have that magic. However, when written form is the only option, it
is interesting to find out how to make it as much OST as possible rather
than just do the top down thing that is likely to be chosen as the
alternative option in this particular case.

More input is WELCOME! And for those of you who haven't looked at it yet,
there is interesting stuff on the Google document:

Can't make it to Florida this week but hoping to get a taste of what's going
on, or perhaps even participate a bit virtually? Are you attending and
interested in helping us connect with some of our colleagues from afar?

Check out our evolving "tapas menu" of virtual offerings on the WOSonOS
Crowdvine site here: <http://wosonos2013.crowdvine.com/pages/virtual_space>
http://wosonos2013.crowdvine.com/pages/virtual_space.

Everything is optional, and is designed to enhance the in-person experience
as well as to help connect people who want to join from a distance. We offer
these choices in the spirit of an experiment, with the intention of learning
from what doesn't work as well as from what does.

Current menu options include:

. Virtual Newsroom to see (and even comment on) what is emerging

from sessions in real time

. Tweets using #wosonos2013

. A "skype buddy" bulletin board where in-person attendees who want

to host a buddy can connect with those who want to try "beaming in" to one
of more of the FL sessions

. A "virtual marketplace" document where anyone who wants to

initiate a parallel virtual session (using whatever conference calling,
videoconferencing or text-based platform they can offer access to) can post
information about their session and invite others to join them. Notes from
these sessions can be posted to the Virtual Newsroom for all to review.

. More to come!

Hi all, can OST be transferred into a virtual environment without loosing
some of its characteristics? It depends of course on what you believe are
the key components of OST. I think the realtime discussions when they happen
in the climate created by the four principles and the one law is an
essential part of OST. I also know from many of the research reports I have
read about online communication, that the written communication in a forum
will work for some people but not for others.

One example, this morning when I read these mails I had to discuss them with
my husband at the breakfast table to get a grip of what I thought about
them. Many people are auditive learners and they get their ideas while they
listen and talk. Others will do fine with written words.

I know that OST works fine in the online environment. My colleague Richard
Schultz and I have used Blackboard Elluminate to create a system for online
OST real time meetings and most people find that it is almost as meeting in
person, which they actually do. The lack of body language which is most
important in any conversation, makes it more difficult to collaborate but if
you at least can hear the voice of the other person, it helps because the
voice shows so much of how your words are interpreted. That is a problem when
writing, especially when you, like I do now, write in a foreign language.

When we created the OST system for online collaboration, we divided the
meetings into smaller sessions, no more than 3 hours maximum. People come to
the first meeting and create the agenda together and they can then use the
law of two feet and move in and out of sessions as they need to. We think
the short sessions will make it possible for most people to attend and still
have time to do the other work they need to at that day. We have also
created a forum and storage place where reports are stored and discussions
can continue in written form in between the meetings. Prioritizing can
easily be made after all the reports are there and then I always, in both
in-person and online OST meetings, invite people to create a new agenda for
the action planning instead of converging etc. They converge the reports in
their heads while reading and reflecting. And we have an introduction course
for people not familiar with discussions in online environment and they are
not so few as one mi ght think.

You can take a look at what we have done at
<http://www.collaborativeways.com> www.collaborativeways.com. I think that
the OST version in written format you mention could be OST-Online which Gaby
Ender created some years ago. It is still a real time meeting version and
from my experience the combination of real time meetings and writing in
forums in between could be what works best.

Blessings

Eiwor

Someone has asked me whether it is possible to do OST solely on the web
over a prolonged period of time (say 3 months) with people coming in and
adding their thoughts now and again as their time permits? His challenge is
a wide variety of stakeholders who will not be able to meet - not even hold
a "normal" web-OST, because they won't be able to be present at the same
time. It is not a huge group and therefore unlikely that someone would
happen to be online all the time, so it would have to be a written OST.

Has anyone tried that? - A written, online OST running over a couple of
months?

I remember hearing about a programme designed to do OST on the web - what
is that called and would it work for a "written" OST?

Or does anyone have other ideas and experiences as to how to get a
conversation / change process going OST-style under the mentioned
circumstances?

Thank you so much, Kari and Lucas, for your feedback. I would love to hear
about the solution you end up with, Kari! I checked out your YouTube video,
Lucas, and I think it is a wonderful tool you have developed. For this
purpose, though, I think it is probably too technical for the people who
will be involved, and I am not sure form what I see on the video whether it
can keep an OST-like creative, open conversation going. It seems to be more
focused.

Does anyone know about the web-OST-system that had apparently been
developed? And whether it caters for a written OST?

I would be really happy for more input from anyone else who has tried
something like this!

Best wishes - not least to all of you in Florida! Wish I could join you!

Hi Anna Christine as I mentioned in my first answer to you, one system is
Open Space-online created by Gaby Ender. This is in writing but a real time
meeting solution. Another system is Collaborative ways which is facilitated
short OST sessions combined with written reflections.

Best regards

Hi Everyone,

There is some excellent energy on this thread of discussion. I think we
should take this opportunity to experiment.

I see collaboration activities as falling into two categories:

1. Churning (ideas mixing via conversation) 2. Harvesting (organizing the
lessons learned, consensus, etc)

This conversation on the OST discussion list has some aspects of both
churning and harvesting, but it's much better at churning. I propose that
we try *harvesting in parallel* using this public, open Google
doc<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1yCpzaJkw3cw-4VYEaDfwmfUhFfievWw_MwKk

_VNpoY4/edit?usp=sharing>.

It's open to anyone who has the link and anyone can edit it. It will take
the form of questions and bullet-point answers so it's easy for anyone to
participate. But *it's open to anyone on the list so its structure will
emerge as we go!*

I believe we'll find a synergy between the discussion happening on this list
and the harvesting on the Google doc (with thoughts bouncing between each),
and in the end, we'll have a useful resource that we can refer to if and
when this topic comes up again.

I mentioned this in the ?virtual tapas menu? post last night, but perhaps it
bears repeating in the context of this thread? One of the ways we are
inviting people to experiment with virtual participation in WOSonOS later
this week is to convene your own virtual sessions in parallel with the ones
we are having in-person. The platform on which these sessions might be
convened is entirely up to the initiator, based on what they have access to
and prefer to use. Those of you who want to experiment with a text-based
conversation are invited to use that approach. Others might choose
conference calling or video conferencing.

We have a Google doc that can serve as a virtual marketplace
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sKmhaBCTfdvNe6sDWJTvknrfRkWXDDWei5n-Afo

7Yl0/edit?pli=1> where you can share details for sessions you want to
initiate, and a Newsroom that also uses a Google docs folder
<https://drive.google.com/?authuser=0&pli=1#folders/0BwHKZIl9vnEDZUFYYzFaNjB

jbU0> so you can easily share your session notes with those who are

gathered in FL and with other virtual participants.

Our main link for information on virtual space connected to WOSonOS is here:

So, here's how to open some space online.

Open a Google Document on Google Drive with an email invite to explore
something.

Invite a bunch of people to share and write into the document. They can put
headings or questions and anyone who has accepted the invite can type under
those headings.

Keep the document open for as long as you want.

Watch it grow and bloom.

Write place, right time, right people.
