[OSList] OS skype with "David" - please clarify which David you wanted to speak with!

I like the idea of meeting over the virtual world regularly, creating a circle, using OS law and principles.

Given I am working in the African context I was meaning David Glenwinkel.

David Glenwinkel here, I was thinking maybe we could create a circle and begin an ongoing skype discussion. A circle in Village Care has a particular meaning. It is an ongoing way to meet and act.

The story behind the circle

In Tengeru Tanzania a group of widows a few years ago formed a “circle” after attending a Village Care OPOS. The circle became their name for their meeting process. Each week they meet and form a circle and open a lock box which has three paddle locks, one on each of three sides. Three of the leaders each hold a key. When they gather they form a circle with their group and open the box so everyone can see what is in the “bank”. In the bank is currency, membership records, and records of loans and projects they have funded. Each person contributes a little each week and when they have enough they decide who in the group will get a loan. That started three years ago and 13 widows saved enough to buy a few chickens. I returned to the area last year, they had several circles, with over 250 women and men involved, had registered over a hundred orphans in our Outcomes for Children program, and had all instituted Basic Home Practices in their homes. I visited several fish farms they have constructed, several goat herds, some cattle, acres of vegetable gardens, and they had just completed their first hydroelectric project (and it was truly all African, and ingenious). Circles have since spread to about half of our VCI involved countries.

Hi all!

As I was creating the doodle reservation for the skype talk we've discussed, I realized that I may have gotten my "Davids" in a jumble.

This week, I have responded to 2 David posts:

1) David Glenwinkel of Village Care who shared his success with the OS approach in Africa (20,000 Open Space events in Africa)

2) David Morgan of Perkins School for the Blind who has been using OS to drive innovation & organizational change

David Glenwinkel of Village Care has offered to skype with us.

I personally would love to speak with both. Can you all please clarify who you thought you were asking to skype with and then I'll send out the doodle link?

If both Davids are in, perhaps we can schedule two skypes :)

It is great to see the energy for skyping with David. And David, I realized later that I had dobbed you into something without asking if it was OK with you first. Sorry for that! I am glad you are happy to converse with us.

It would be fabulous to meet face to face but i am not going to be at the WOSONOS unfortunately, so virtual media it is for me at this stage.

Tricia, thanks for organising the doodle (I am not sure what that is, but it sounds like it will assist). Given that we are in different parts of the world, a world calendar would assist us to coordinate a time. I am in Kenya. Does Doodle do time zones? If not that is fine and I can work it out.

This will be great.

ok, great - I can help. Just wanted to make sure.

I can set up a doodle that allows all interested parties to select a range of times that they are available. David's availability of course will prevail!

I'll do that tonight and post link to the list. ciao!

Tricia – I think you may have misunderstood. I think David was saying that, given some time to clear his schedule, he would be willing to do a little multi-party Skyping – If somebody were to pull all that together. Which is what I think Celia is talking about???? But who am I and what do I know. And not incidentally it looks like a number of the interested parties doing similar work around the world might be heading towards St. Petersburg for WOSONOS. Heard today from a neat Lady, Mrs. Song whose work is in China and Tibet. Skype is nice, but face-to-face could be awesome!

Hey David! Sorry! Didn't mean to volunteer you for extra work in my zealousness!

Any informal thoughts that you have, whenever you have time to have them is dandy!

Hi David!

I would like to second Harrison's interest in some of your stories on OS-driven innovation and organizational change.

It is an area that I am interested in and I'm not sure if I'll make it to the WOSONOS...or if I can wait :O

thanks!

David – How nice to see you here on OSLIST! And I surely hope you will get some of the stories you are looking for. But turnaround is fair play, I think J I do know some the neat things you have been doing for and with Perkins – but it seems to me that you were remarkably reserved (shy? reticent?) in telling your own story! Pushing the envelope in terms of OS experience in work environments – that is more than (in addition to) simply “doing an event” – is absolutely key to our next level of learning, I think. And you have a lot to tell us!

And not incidentally this sort of conversation is a central part of what I hope will be a rich and rewarding encounter at WOSONOS in Florida this May. I don’t think you have ever been to a WOSONOS – which is our annual global gathering of OS folks, at least those who care to come. Last year it was in London, and the year before in Santiago – but this year it is right in your (our) back yard – well a little bit south.

You will find all the information at: http://wosonos2013.crowdvine.com So tell us YOUR story and bring your friends. Undoubtedly you will find a receptive and reciprocal audience.

Hi everyone...

My name is David Morgan. I have been practicing Open Space Technology since a year or so before my attendance at the Practice of Peace event on Whidbey Island, Washington, November 2003. I remember the magic of that event, with about 130 people. I met Harrison outside in the rain in his blue jeans, cowboy hat and smoking his pipe. I met some wonderful people that day; Anne Stadler who, it turns out I am related to from way back, Lisa Heft, Gabrielle Shirley, Peggy Holman and many others...

For many years I have run industrial companies. For the past 8-years I have run a product company for a major non-profit, Perkins School for the Blind. I have been blessed to be able to apply the principles of self-organization and Open space to drive innovation and organizational change. We have been changing the face of education for the blind and how children learn braille - developing new product and driving innovation in education and product development.

I am reaching out to this community to solicit stories from Open Space. Stories which reflect the use of Open Space Technology to drive innovation, product development, or organizational change...

Do you have or know of someone who has used open space in facilitate innovation, new product development, or organizational change? If so, I'd love to hear your stories...

Thanks so much. Warmest regards.

David Morgan
