Hi Tonnie,
Thank you so much for your recommendation of the online OST meetings Eiwor
and I are doing.
>From our side it has been so much fun to create this process and to hold
the space across so many time zones!

Ever since I learned OST about 12 years ago, I had little dream inside of me
to be able to hold many such open OST forums, but because I needed a
physical space to do them in, it was a challenge. Finding a space, making a
commitment to rent it and getting enough people out to cover the time and
costs provided enough resistance not to do anything. Now the online
environment with increasing bandwidth and capability for interaction opens
up so much opportunity to play with others. I think it only gets better and
more powerful with time. The cost is low compared to a physical room, the
audience can stretch around the globe and the lead times to organize are so
much shorter. I love the potential here!

The online environment does provide some interesting challenges. However,
people do find their way, just like in a "regular", in-person OST.
- For the participant, the online environment may be quite unfamiliar. But
imagine the shock some people feel when they walk into a regular in-person
OST meeting for the first time and see the circle of chairs, the strange
posters and no agenda. They subconsciously know that they are about to step
into a new paradigm of working together. There can be a range of curiosity,
to fear of what might happen, to "I cannot work this way!". Still, they find
their way, or they use their two feet and leave. Most people hang out to
satisfy their curiosity.

In the online environment, many people can feel "I cannot connect to people
online!" and this may be true for some. However, I have found that this is a
belief system that many people can change or adapt to and even thrive in if
they have the desire. People find their own way and some people seem to do
better in the online environment than in-person once they get use to it.

- As a facilitator, there are so many more things to be conscious of in
organizing and holding the online space. There are still the "technical
glitches" that are more likely to happen in the online space than the
in-person space and I need to plan for and be aware of all these
"limitations". For example, I usually don't have to worry about me as a
facilitator "instantly disappearing" in the physical space, but this is a
real possibility online! However, most "glitches" things can be planned
around or overcome. If all else fails, I can also fall back on, "Whatever
happens is the only thing that could have" :-)

I know that online OST will not be for everyone, just as OST itself is not
for everyone. However, I feel that as OST emerges into the online
environment, it has the potential to even more rapidly spread this way of
working together. It also has the potential to change and interconnect our
world beyond what we might imagine. I personally am prepared to be surprised
by what happens when we open this globally interconnected space.

I hope you all get a change to join one of our open spaces to experience for
yourself how this environment fits for you.
Be prepared to be surprised!

Blessings,
Richard Schultz

Meeting, recommendation

Hi everyone,

If you want to be surprised, I recommend to attend one of the online
collaborative meetings. I joined the OST meeting on January 9th and I
certainly was surprised. To be frank, I joined to see how things work out
with this software. It turns out that the online meeting works out pretty
much the same as a live OST meeting. You just have to raise your hand
virtually if you want to say something. There is a live facilitator, and
Richard is a very good one, I learned from the way he introduced the rules
and law and made participants feel comfortable.

Give yourself 15 minutes to get used to the tool. The instructions during
the meeting are very clear, so agenda setting, forming subgroups and making
a report are done as usual. I enjoyed the experience of talking to people
from all over the world. Opens not only Space, but also Time.

Of course, nothing beats meeting face to face, but for me this is the best
way to get people together fast, easy and at low costs.

Enjoy the Open Space and Time Technology,

Best,
Tonnie
