Eslam - It is so wonderful to hear how you people are moving right along.
Given the kind of tumult you and you countrymen/women are facing it is
incredibly important to Keep the Space Open - so that good ideas, new and
old can show up. When that space closes, doctrine, ideology and closed
minds take over, or so it has always seemed to me. So Keep the Space Open my
friends and Congratulations!

Subject: [OSList] Open Space "Education - Step Forward"

Dear Friends :)

Last week, me , Dr. Claudia Gross , Ramy Mortada , Hala Faraj and Kazem
Hemeida from OSE have facilitated our first Open Space in Alex.

On May 14th, 2012, 58 people from Alex, Cairo,Assuit, Behira and Sohag "The
ages varied from 13 to 55" responded to an invitation letter to the
conference "Education - Step Forward" . They gathered in Open Space with no
more agenda than what is laid out in that letter. An hour or so later, they
had raised more than 45 major issues related to the future of educational
system in Egypt, and arranged them into a 7-session working agenda.

At the end of the 3-day conference, 31 documentations of the conversation
sessions were on hand, 25 new project ideas had been born, a facebook group
established and 58 new friendships gained.

The working language was Arabic.

The OS was organized by the Open Space Egypt in partnership with the Swedish
Institute in Alexandria, and Bridge Foundation.

More information will be sent later, stay tuned ;)

Below some recomndations from the OS :

"

1.	Educational institutions should adapt to the different types of
intelligence, to provide suitable teaching methods for different kind of
learners
2.	Teachers are central to the educational process, therefore, the
major investment should be in teachers skills development and improving
their economic conditions
3.	Education should be centralized based on the nature of the different
localities
4.	Encourage cooperation between teachers and students
5.	Studies and research should extract lesson learned from other cases
in other similar countries
6.	The gap between curricula and the labor market needs should be
bridged
7.	Enhance and give more attention to the Arabic language (to remain
the first language), while encourage learning other languages and increase
the effectiveness and efficiency teaching of these other language
8.	Integrate creative thinking in school curricula
9.	Wasted money in governmental institutions should be utilized to
improve the educational system
10.	Encourage private sector to invest in education, based on win-win
partnerships
11.	Integrate community service in the educational system
12.	Expand self-financing schools and universities (apprenticeship
models)
13.	Involve and support civil society organizations to active role in
educational reform
14.	Form pressure groups for educational reform
15.	Expand on using alternative media to raise awareness about
importance of education
16.	Install and utilize ICT learning/teaching tools (e.g. online
learning)
17.	Encourage learning outside the classroom (e.g. field visits, school
court, exchange visits between schools)

"

Special Thanks to Harrison Owen, Claudia Gross, Michael Pannwitz, Sharon
Joy and Artur Silva.

Thanks and have a nice day,

Eslam Erman
