online open space article

Very Good point Chris: "That space will open. That is a risk depending on
how you look at things. and depending how well prepared you are to deal with
an open space."

And to carry it further, I have told clients that the real risk of Open
Space is that it's usual results will occur. To wit, people who have
previously seemed to be dull, uncreative, reclusive, and unhappy will
suddenly show themselves to be vibrant, innovative, engaged - and worst of
all they almost always have fun. This can be a real shock, especially for
those who have made a living "motivating" these employees, creating training
programs for inspired leadership and the like. For all their efforts, to say
nothing of the money they consumed, the only thing that really needed to be
done, get out of the way, and let the people be the people. Not a career
enhancing move as seen by many HR Departments. After all they could be out
of business J

But the real risk is that when you have a bunch of creative, inspired folks
who want to get on with the business, it is quite like that they will do
just that - GO. That could mean a major change of plans at the old place of
business. It could also mean an exodus to greener pastures.

Creating the space for inspired performance is no big deal. Just an ordinary
day in Open Space. Living with all of that can be something of a test.

Probably more true to say that open Space FEELS risky to those used to
command and control. What is the real risk of Open Space?

That space will open. That is a risk depending on how you look at things.
and depending how well prepared you are to deal with an open space.

Nice article Christine, but I am not quite sure what the risk is??? Perhaps
that Open Space "works?" That would be truly appalling! If it were true most
of the agony that people go through to reduce risk and gain certainty of
outcome in gatherings of various sorts would be seen for what it is - pretty
much a waste of time. Or something.

Hi All,

I sent this out when the list was down so I'm not sure that anyone received.

Connect Your Meetings recently published an online article entitled "Open
Space Meetings" with the tag line: Sometimes risky, the unscripted format is
popular, productive and powerful.
