Wall and Technology

Hi Mark,

I have seen virtual walls at techie, barcamp style events. They had a paper sign-up board and then
an organizer transcribed it to a calendar which was projected on a main screen.

Last month someone posted a link to this..which could be
projected:http://wallwisher.com/wall/smallcreativeideas

Maybe you could use a collaborative calendar program like Google cal.

Regarding tech breaking...this is possible but let's not over-blow the issue. Effective systems have
backups and redundancies built in to mitigate the problems...you can always fall back on pen and
paper. Any system has a possibility of failure but the real question is whether the value outweighs
the risk...in this case you can't enable thousands to see and interact with a piece of paper simultaneously but you can with a tech solution.

If I was trying to set something like this up, I would ask first about the space and the attendees.
Who are they? Do you want them to have direct control of the board or have the posting be
managed through a transcriber? Do you have visible walls for projecting onto or enough
wifi/laptops access so everyone can get the info that way?

The simplest set up from a paper presentation is a video projection. You have a possible break
point in the computer, the video projector, and at their connection.

You might use a projection as a distribution method by enabling multiple computers to access the
same image of the "wall" and project it throughout the event. You might create multiple points of
input by have folks email/text posts to a secretary of the wall. Or you might have a few computers
available in the spaces with access to a collaborative program and just let the software aggregate
the info.

Hope that helps.

Feel free to email me if you want to talk further.

Cheers,
Erik

the ritual/organic perspective it brings. And as a back up should technology fail. I've also
considered using Twitter or a custom texting tool to update people about changes to the
schedule, or a way to search for topics that interested them.
