Shu-fang and I spent a cold but sunny weekend in Taitung, south
eastern Taiwan doing one of series of open space events in an
on-going series for a county-wide community development project. A
participant in one of the earlier OS events decided to have one in
his own community before Chinese New Year. Memorable moments for me:
- Several consultants doing research for future planning for the
county attended. When one of them gave some ideas in one of the
discussion groups, the reply was "we've already done that - and more."
- In another discussion a suggestion was made to put up a sign to
help tourists find where they want to go. As we began the closing
circle several people ran outside to meet a truck that just drove up
outside delivering just such a sign that had been ordered earlier.
Their message - "we know what to do (not just talk). All we need is
more participation and the time to get things done."
- The venue was the Elders Center so there was some coming and going
all day. Two quite elderly ladies came with a caretaker for their
Sunday foot massage and stayed long enough to sit in on one session
and add further comments to the newswall report on the topic of "How
to care for elders".
A great day which ended with visiting the sponsor's family organic
farm, picking passion and starfruit and coming home loaded with fruit
and vegetables - and eagerly awaiting the next event.
