Harrison,
Yes, I prefer Doc. Or Steven.
One of the lessons from OST, for me, is that that inactivity of doing very
little (that is, facilitating) requires a particular kind of consciousness
and attention.
When I first read your book, and first facilitated, I realized that it
mattered.
All the stuff about self organization, the shamanic walk/Bounding the
Circle, THJ, and the rest that you've drawn from human history and
consciousness COULD work without a facilitator. But I think it's unlikely.
The concepts of holding space and time are pretty esoteric, in their
simplicity. I find that the act of being present, on my part as
facilitator, makes a difference for the attendees.
If I just sat in a corner, or tried to steer the event, it wouldn't work as
an Open Space. Being able to let go and yet have a contributory presence is
essential.
This is like looking at a beach. From one distance/perspective, it's smooth
and featureless and simple.
And then you start getting closer and you realize how much complexity and
subtlety there is.
I love this stuff!
Doc
