When a group work together over time, as they did in Seattle, setting time/space slots is not that much of a issue. Everything just seems to happen. But with a group newly arrived in Open Space some sort of a minimal time/space framing makes them feel a little more comfortable, if nothing else. It simply gives them a place to start -- however, it is not uncommon in my experience that by the second day the "schedule" becomes much more fluid as the group finds it "groove." And when that happens, setting specific time/space "slots" doesn't really matter that much.

For me the move out of the suggested schedule to something much more emergent is a clear indication that good things are really happening, and as a matter of fact I often introduce the "Post-it" routine by saying that this is just for starters and everybody needs to know that the time/space arrangements is for the group as a whole to determine -- and they do. But this determination is not a matter of sitting around and having a discussion but rather an organic phenomenon as the total group finds its own way.

And having that sort of discussion is something I would definitely want to avoid. Getting on with the business quickly is a prime goal, and it is only when they are in the flow of "doing business" that the appropriate time/space arrangements become clear.

Thank you for the story, Craig.

As for

I recall hearing in a butterfly conversation at the Goa WOSonOS that the
Spirited Work community near Seattle hasn't used the the time-space matrix
since the late 90's. Mark? Peggy? Anne? Michael? Tree?

warmly,
Raffi
