Tuning the bass note: a story from an organization using Open Space in an ongoing way.

Hi Larry...

It is a national Aboriginal organization, working in the area of political
and community development. They are focussed on helping First Nations in
Canada implement governance that serves the expression of collective
inherent rights. It's no big secret, but I didn't ask them if it was okay
to use names.

For those of you in the rest of the world, basically in Canada indigenous
communities have a unique set of rights stemming from the fact that they
lived in this continent before the European colonial powers arrived. These
rights continue to live on, and are enshrined and protected in our Canadian
Constitution. Although the rights are not defined, they broadly apply to
lands, resources, education, language, culture, health, child welfare and
most other areas that governments protect. Each of the more than 630 First
Nation communities in Canada has these rights, but creating the governance
capacity to exercise them is a major undertaking and that is the work of the
organization with whom I am working.

Cheers,

Chris
