Halifax: Advice for new international travelers

I am planning to go to Halifax without a passport.  The Canadian
consulate website indicates a birth certificate and a state-issued ID
(i.e. driver's license) is enough.  U.S. custom regs will require a
passport beginning in December 2005. . . but not yet.

Yikes.  After Judi's advice, I am anxious.  I don't think there is
time to get a passport.
