After the OST event...

Doug--

One of my clients wanted follow-up meetings for about 9 months after their
all-staff Open Space. The topic concerned an upcoming move to a new facility,
which was under construction. The meetings, with the Transition Team, were a
combination of implementing recommendations from Open Space and project
management relating to construction.

There was not a desire to have every meeting be another Open Space, but these
were elements that continued:

**Each meeting started with team members posting the topics that they wanted
discussed. These were discussed serially, because this was the best
opportunity to get input from all team members, who worked in different facilities. I
also checked the notes from earlier meetings to identify action items that
needed further attention.

**Someone generally brought the rock which had served as a talking piece in
the OS closing circle, and placed it in the center of the table--especially if
there was any tension around the day's work. If someone wanted to express
their feelings on a particular issue, they often picked up the rock before
speaking.

**Discussion groups on certain critical issues that had convened in Open
Space were invited to become task forces working out the details of those issues.
They met during their regular working hours, and arrangements were made for
someone to cover their job during meetings, if needed. These groups made
recommendations on the allocation of storage space, group norms for working in
cubicles rather than closed offices, security measures and other "hot" issues,
and their recommendations were generally implemented.

**There was a higher level of awareness about inclusion, openness in the
decision process, and encouraging personal responsibility--these "process"
concerns became a part of the conversation.

So, the regular meetings were not Open Space, but I felt they were informed
by the spirit of Open Space.

Joelle
