If you follow this link, you can read a story about "Dial-a-Poem",
which was started in 1969.  You dialed in and heard three minutes of
poetry.  The phone/poem bank folded but the phenomenon is alive and
well on the internet at www.ubu.com/sound/dial_index.html.

Poetry seems to be in the open air.
