OST in CHILE

Juan Luis Walker B. jlwalker at MI.CL

Dear Friends:

In Chile we say “there is no debt that doesn’t get paid nor time limit that
doesn’t run out”.

After that memorable day in May 2002, when I simultaneously made my first
appearance in this list (Item # 007276 “Getting on the wave”; 02/05/19.)
and facilitated my first Open Space Technology event, much water has flown
under the bridge.

My record to date, April 2004, is a total of 36 OST events in two public
organization, three multinational companies and one private university.
Most of them were conducted with my friend and colleague Jorge Amigo, who
also recently subscribed to this list.

As was to be expected, the results were amazing, experience was fascinating
and we have obtained much valuable lessons from the events.

None of the above would have been possible without the unequaled support
and resources that the oslist and the wiki-web offered us. I thank you all
very much for making it possible for me to share your broad experience in
this field.

In order that I can take fuller advantage of this community, I must improve
my English. Now, with the help of a translator friend, I can offer you the
article in English (“The Spirit and Liturgy of ESSCO S.A.”) in which I
report on my first experience as an OST facilitator in a public drinking
and wastewater service (May 2002), which I had promised earlier to many of
you.

I wrote that article together with my other friend and colleague Fernando
Rouliez, with whom I had the honor and pleasure to share all of the
challenges presented by the project on ESSCO S.A.

We think that in the overall effort of organizational development in that
company, OST played a fundamental role, which made it possible to
consolidate successfully a series of others specific interventions. We
definitively believe it was a decisive step towards achieving among all the
workers of that enterprise, the adoption of the strategic programs as their
own, so that it was possible to raise the value of the company in the
process of establishing the concession.

In effect, in December 2003 the company became a private concession in
which process it obtained the highest bids in comparison with other similar
companies, and most of the staff assumed the challenges that this change
implied.

We feel very proud of our contribution and this feeling was share by the
top management. They have already left the company, but the water still
flows and the workers are supplying the public satisfactorily under a
private administration.

Those interested in receiving this article can obtain it at:
juanluis at walker.as

I hope in the future to describe to you other interesting projects in
Chile, where I and my friends have used OST, with excellent results.

First things first.

Un fuerte abrazo para todos,
Juan Luis Walker B.

  Dear OSlist members--for you:

"Maybe the most important Kabbalistic teaching on love comes from
the realm of cosmology, where the biblical mystics introduce to us a
beautiful and important idea that enormously affects how we live our
lives. The idea in two sentences: The world does not come into being
through divinity stepping forward in a creative gesture. Quite the
opposite--God steps back in a movement of sacrificial withdrawal in
order to create the world. God creates an empty space, and only then, in
that space, can the world emerge from the divine womb of being! 'But how
can that be?' we ask the mystics. 'Isn't the whole point of the God idea
that divinity is infinite and everywhere? How can God just step back?'
'This,' respond the biblical mystics, 'is precisely the mystery of
love.'"
--Rabbi Marc Gafni, The Mysteries of Love

warm wishes, and thank you all for all of the space you continuously
create,
Christy Lee-Engel

p.s. I shall post a proper introduction some other time--briefly, I am a
recent new subscriber, had the fortunate and extraordinary experience of
participating in the practice of peace on whidbey island, and I guess I
have been a "lurker", "butterfly" and "sponsor" (still learning the
language!)

Hello world. ;-)
=20
After roughly a year learning, using, and enjoying Open Space as a
facilitator, I have moved to a new company that appears to have chosen =
GE
WorkOut as their methodology for changing the world.
=20
Well, I've read the book, attended the WorkOut, and am wondering "what's =
all
the fuss?" Perhaps its the consulting firm that ran our GE WorkOut =
session
(their interpretation of the methodology), or perhaps it's the GE =
WorkOut
methodology itself, but I find that OST has far more positives and fewer
drawbacks than GEW. To be sure, there are a couple of areas in which I
believe GEW could inform and improve OST (particularly in the post-event
phase), but overall I've found GEW somewhat lacking.
=20
What I'm hoping is that someone here might have experience with GEW that
they'd be willing to share with me, and that possibly even some =
comparative
research has been done between OST and GEW.
=20
Any and all insights, input, feedback and URL's graciously accepted!
=20
Thanks for your reading time.

Harrison,

You never stop to amaze and show beauty with your crystal clarity and
passion and I am, as we all are, forever grateful to be able to witness
and be part of it. The invitation and commitment (is that a given?)
<that we share what we are experiencing and learning OPENLY (what
else?). > had taught me some courage and demanded articulation
(and had all of us, US that are not US speakers, stretch out English)
and was one of the main factors that moved my walls wider (Opened Space)
by making way for me to actively earn and be part of the global
community to the extant I am capable of.

This fish ball of OS listers had taught me everyday in a very tangible
way that we are not alone (there will always be someone awake that cares
enough to answer the most needy question.), and that it takes one to
tango: If you reach out for long enough, invitation and authenticity
will be answered (and will get you in even if you are "just looking".)
and will wade through cynicism and prejudice.
Knowing the nature of the list has put a constant demand for me to feel
safe only by knowing my intention, with no givens but trust (and
encouragement from you my friends of the list) . I can not always be
open and intimate on the list, but it is liberating and rewarding when I
can and I hope I'll get better with experience.
By watching you, Harrison, and Chris and Michael and Peggy and Julie and
all of you jewels -you on the list - I learnt that teaching oneself is a
most precious gift we give to others.
Thank you each and everyone.

So, before I get too mushy (it is very late)I will end with a practical
note:
I know the OSList is right to be open to everyone because this is our
"growing edge" in two ways: internally/personally and in
number/influence, yet I wish that we give the newcomers a fair chance:
Michael H (or anybody who cares) do we/could we have a nice "invitation
to OS text" that would be the first page if entering to the archives
directly? An inviting paragraph aligns the heart to deeper listening. I
guess you would rightly say 'passion bounded by responsibility" and
point it back to me - but , try with a little help from my friends
Goodnight

.

My concern, however, comes from a different place, and possibly a
broader
perspective. As I said in a note posted some little time ago, which
simply
re-iterated what I have said ad nausea, Open Space, from the moment I
created, developed, stumbled into it (fill in the blank) is and has been
free. BUT I have always insisted that there is a COST -- that we share
what
we are experiencing and learning OPENLY (what else?). This LIST has been
and
continues to be an incredible vehicle for sharing. Increasingly, it has
become a global resource for anybody who wants to push back the walls of
their world, ie Open Space. The nature of what we have shared covers a
very
broad spectrum from the perverse to the peevish to the profound -- and
onwards to the philosophical, with multiple side trips to the technical
details. In sum, it represents the full spectrum of our collective
journey
in Open Space, as we have chosen to share it. At no point in the history
of
this LIST has it ever been, nor was it intended to be, a private club.
We
have taken great pains, I think, to honor and respect each other, but at
the
end of the day the purpose of OSLIST, or at least my purpose for this
LIST
ever since I signed on -- has not been to provide a safe and secure
sanctuary in which the members may communicate. Rather, it has been to
build
a body of knowledge and experience which will be available to anybody
who
cares.

Speaking very personally, I can say that the fundamental purpose of my
life
has been to share whatever I am, have experienced, or might know -- with
anybody who cared, to the extent that my presence, experience or
knowledge
might be helpful. Have I always been true to my ideals? Definitely not,
but
at least in terms of Open Space Technology, and all that I have learned
about Open Space in my life and world -- I think I have given it my best
shot. At a very mundane level, this is why I never chose to patent,
trademark, or copyright Open Space. Certainly my books are copyrighted,
but
that was more a matter of convention, to say nothing of my publishers'
wishes (after all they were investing the "big bucks" and wanted some
sense
of security). However, if you wander around the websites of the world
dealing with Open Space you will find large passages of my material, and
even my illustrations, presented without attribution. I am delighted! I
know
that Open Space is not about me. It is about US -- and that includes a
whole
mess of people who don't even know they are a part of US.

So back to OSLIST. My image (vision?) is that of a wonderful electronic
fishbowl with real people, opening real space, and reflecting on their
experience right out there in front of God and everybody. There is, and
has
been, a real sense of intimacy and genuine community which is
characteristic
of every Open Space of which I have been a part. This intimacy and
community
is often manifest in wonderful hugs and kisses. It is also manifest in
our
willingness to confront and engage each other directly and with respect.
Occasionally we have risen to the heights, and just as often we have
found
time for a little peevishness. In short, there has been chaos, confusion
and
conflict in abundance -- all included and transcended to become a
viable,
organic reality available for all to see. This, so far as I am
concerned, is
life in Open Space. Or to be truthful, it is just life.

I have always assumed that the people who populate OSLIST (including all
you
wonderful Lurkers!) are of a special sort. They really care about Open
Space
(or want to know more about it), and they really care to share what they
have learned and experienced with whomsoever. Our benefits on OSLIST are
considerable -- we have received support, encouragement, challenge,
suggestions, questions -- from which we (or for sure "I") have grown
enormously. We have cried together, argued, pontificated, blown our
minds in
marvelous and positive ways. And with these benefits comes a
responsibility
to share what we are, and what we have learned with anybody who cares to
know. That, at least, is my responsibility as I have come to understand
it.

Subject: So what should be done with the archieves now?

Hi,
I still wonder about the archieves.
May be, I'm not completely up to date, putting just the same questions,
as
somebody did just before. - But I still didn't get, why the archieves
can
be found and accessed by google. Or is this just something, which is
planned? I mean, archieves can be very interesting for a community.
But the so called "container" , the "skin" , the "whomb" with the
"cellular
compound", the baby inside has to be respected also. To me, it's very
important, to know about.
Not, because it bothers me personally. But it's just important, to know
about who in this is list is feeling like to do what?-I know some
archetypes
of interests, but not much more...but to know, whether finally this
becomes
a "tabu", just represented by having more "lurkers", or whether there is
a
true consensus in the community, to me it's important.-So, finally, I'd
like
to know about the problems quality: Is it a technical problem, or is it
a
decission - problem?

If it is something to be decided,
where is a statement in favor of why the archieves should be opened to
anybody, even not being in the list? -To me, It would be, like taking
away
the protecting skin, even if I have not the slightest problem about, for
eg,
making jokes on "W"'s..being found later at somebodies webpage.. But,
may
be, there are some convincing arguments also? Besides, dealing with
container-images: It's also important, that the "mother" feels good. If
the
mother doesn't feel good, the baby neither won't..But who is who in this
case ? <grin>

If it is not,
then, why it's not just possible, to maintain the archieves protected by
a
simple password, like it's usual in many lists?
If somebody wants to make for eg a research, he can ask, simply..
Or, is it some problem, wich the "boisy"-staff is not able to solve,
actually? And what would be necessary to resolve it?

I'd love to be enabled to get some clear opinion about the issue .-))

With passionate interest in this list
Nicolai

Thanks for a wonderful conversation!
I shall try to share our side of town:=20

We ask every one of the sponsors what are they wishing
for =96 this sets the intention.

We work with a steering committee of people
representing, as microcosm, the whole and we ask them the same question
(what are you wishing for). This group is created by the sponsor and
he/she are part of this group yet anyone who wishes to can join in (and
they do). This group is presented with the sponsor's intention and they
are to decide whether to use Open Space technology or another form, the
theme, the participants ect.

We never speak about givens and I do not recall ever
deciding about it=85 I believe initially, while reading the guide book
and trying to be literal about implementing it, our understanding was
that open space is about:
- allowing real choice for people and trusting they'll do well and

- opening ourselves to inviting everyone, trusting they are the
right people (for us to figure in what way).

Open Space for me means that what holds it/us together is the deep
irresistible attraction of the center (intention, invitation, belief
that we can) and not commitment to givens( defined by what we can not,
will not). They both exist and are in the consciousness of every one but
the same way we use language of positive future and question to open
space we didn't use givens.

While I was in training with Brigitte in 2001 I first put my conscious
mind to the questions of givens but still I did not use it. Maybe I do
not really believe people have many real "givens" . imo it is more about
trust, creative conversations and intention . Many times in the steering
committee people will challenge the sponsors with "what if" questions to
check their intentions (or limitations=85), this is a very reach =
dialogue
that helps open the space, grow trust and bonding and practice, many
times for the first time, what conversation between equals can look like
when they alien. This becomes a nourishing ground for the OS event and a
relevant place to air your fears, vulnerabilities and apprehensions; ask
for help and get some.=20
So it basically a practice to fallow after the event is over.=20
Many times I feel that the steering committee is where the space is
really opened, especially in multi organizational issues when we start
with sponsorship of the 3 "good ones" and we end up with 12"who care
about" organizations and at list 30 people on the steering/preparatory
committee, and long before the os event all of them know something about
inviting; something about inclusion; and "be prepared to be =
surprised"=85.

And last one for tonight, Kerry wrote

jeopardising an opportunity to discuss matters of great importance to

And this is one of the most ground-shaking ahha's of sponsor's that I
love to watch!

That's my 2 agorot (cents in Hebrew coin).
Thank you for keeping me awake and having me think in English so late

I love you all a whole lot

Subject: is it still open?

Chris

Good question. I don't know that our open space events are any more
or less inspiring than anyone else's. The process always works,
sometimes it works better than others depending on the participants,
theme, venue and other elements.

We never get into givens, because they may or may not be real. Once
they are tabled, however, they can become barriers. Assumptions
also may inhibit discussion and they often are not tested.

I take your point about givens not restricting passion and
creativity. But, can't they limit all those other variables you
mention - purpose, budgets, accountaibility, partnerships et al.
Isn't it more positive if these things were on the table for
discussion so participants might find a way to do things differently
and overcome prearranged or existing restrictions?

If participants propose impossible actions, they usually do not get
done. But, surprise, surprise, we find that people are very
responsible and would not dream of jeopardising an opportunity to
discuss matters of great importance to their future by being
excessively demanding and unrealistic. In this sense, therefore, the
events are self governing, because the opportunity to discuss the
future is highly valued.

If we believe Open Space is about diverse people talking and reaching
agreement over things that matter to them, the energy, passion,
commitment and ownership will decide what, if anything, happens.
So,the only given is what participants decide they want to do and, if
appropriate, what sponsors will support.

If sponsors rule out certain things before an event even starts, they
are unlikely to respond positively if a given/assumption is
challenged. It becomes a challenge to management preogatives and we
are thrown back into the power game.

Let's not forget that the sponsor benefits, gaining a feel for what
issues are important, a consensus over priorities, creative and
innovative inputs, etc. This is valuable information and sponsors
need to be responsible too, that is, have the ability to respond.
Why restrict their response by pinning down limits that may or may
not exist, that might be changed or resolved by participants?

Cheers

Kerry

Nicolai
