Following work we were commissioned to do by the Health Development
Agency which was endorsed by the Department of Health and Modernisation
Agency it became clear there is a real need to develop peoples
skills/methods in working with the public. In response to this need we
are running a 3 day training programme on 'Creating and Achieving Public
and Community involvement' using Open Space as a method. Please
circulate this to anyone who you think might find it useful.

There is an email JPEG leaflet and hardcopy leaflet for anyone would
like fuller infornation - availble on request (NB: for people not using
broadband it takes 3 mins to download the email version).

OPEN SPACE can be quite simply a fast and simple way to hold better,
more productive meetings.
At a deeper level, it enables people to experience a very different
quality of event in which self-managed work groups are the norm and
leadership a constantly shared phenomenon.
Diversity becomes a resource to be used instead of a problem to be
overcome, and personal empowerment a shared experience. It is also fun.
In a word, the conditions are set for fundamental insights and changes.

OPEN SPACE is appropriate in situations where a major issue must be
resolved, characterised by high levels of complexity, high levels of
diversity (in terms of people involved), the presence of potential or
actual conflict and with a decision time of yesterday.

OPEN SPACE runs on two fundamentals:
Passion and responsibility. Passion engages the people in the room.
Responsibility ensures that things get done.
A focusing theme or question provides the framework for the event. The
art of the question lies in saying just enough to evoke attention, while
leaving sufficient open space for the imagination to run wild.

HARRISON OWEN, Open Space Technology Master Practitioner.

      delivery

· A tool for meaningful community participation and public involvement

'We strongly feel this forum was a challenging yet non-threatening
