Hi Ted
hello from Germany. I lived in Bolivia for a while and got in touch with
education popular there, so may be I can contribute my thoughts to this.

If popular education means the same like "educación popular", which is
wellknown in latin america, well: I would say it belongs to the same
philosophy of liberation, of personal and collective growth - and
change. Educacion popular questions established power relationships,
goes for humanity and the well being of all the people, not only a few -
so, for peace, if you want. One of the best known philosophers and
practitioners is surely Paolo Freire, the Brasilian educator. As well
Augusto Boal with his Street theatre, the theatre of liberation, to work
with people in the streets - consciousness raising, to build up belief,
trust in change, hope etc.. in the same line with Leonardo Boff with his
"theology of liberation". There are centers for educacion popular - for
community building and collective learning. They always work with
participative methodology, and different methods and techniques. Popular
education is a broad approach, which integrates many methods and
techniques. So as philosophy "it fits" to Open Space - I would say. But
in the sense of a specific "method", popular education is rather the
"title" under which Open Space could be brought in. It is not ONE
specific technique or method. What do the others think?
best wishes Susanne
