Friends--
In a week with plenty of grim news from around the world, I was heartened by
the news that Desmond Tutu was in Seattle last week to officially launch the
US branch of the Desmond Tutu Peace Foundation. The focus of this work in
the US will be to develop leadership training at several universities and
community colleges across the US, including the principles that Tutu has used
in peacemaking in South Africa. Key players are director Constance Rice and
the dean of St. Mark's Cathedral. Constance Rice was one of the organizers
of an international women's conference which I was a part of a few years ago,
and her qualities and past experience make her a wonderful choice for the job.
The various Seattle events where Bishop Tutu spoke were sold out, so I have
only newspaper reports to rely on. I was especially moved by a delightful
photo of Tutu dancing up the center aisle in the recessional after Sunday
morning worship at St. Marks. And by the report that one of the events on
his schedule was lunch with a group of Seattle-area high school students,
chosen for the community leadership they have already shown.
In the midst of intractable conflict in many areas, it is heartening to me to
see a few people around the world beginning to explore the possibilities of
forgiveness, reconciliation, and moving out of entrenched positions to
discover our areas of shared agreement. Thanks to everyone on this list who
is pursuing the practice of peace!
Joelle Everett
