Hey all!

I'm a little confused here... Although I am well aware that opening the
space, by itself, is enough I thought that your recent experience in
Rome illustrated your telling a story as part of the opening. Do I have
it wrong?

Just to add my agreement. I only use the transfer in process when I am NOT
doing open space, but using other process facilitation methods...to
accomplish to a degree what the opening does for OST.

I agree with you Meg...the transfer in process provides an opportunity for
people to be fully present to the purpose of the meeting. As some other
people have responded to me off the list, there are other names for this
process. For me, anything that is respectful, provides lots of silent
reflection time (that is so valuable as Harrison pointed out) to tune in to
where we are at inside of us, engage our whole brain and enables
participants to find their voice in a non-threatening way...although I must
say there are a few people who get taken to the edge of chaos and wonder
what on earth they got themselves into.

One of the giggles that I had came from Bernhard as I described that this
was different than and Icebreaker - his comment on an icebreaker (with his
permission)
----
Okay,
yeah icebreakers do the following:
They define that there is ice
They use force to free their path
Quite macho, isn't it?

Doug I did not answer all of your questions:
----
Why does it take them so deep?

And what parts of it are necessary? As my experience shows, the dyads may
not be a necessary thing (one more thing to do without?).
-------

I am not certain about the theory behind why it takes people deep. Perhaps
Birgitt and others will add to this. My understanding is that it starts with
the engagement of the whole brain. The step of choosing an object and then
trying to link it to the theme of the meeting opens up creativity. The
silent time for reflection...how much time do people take to do that...
opens them up. My preference is to use objects from nature. That sometimes
makes a deep connection...lots of ideas about this

The dyads give a people a chance to find their voice and be truly heard to
the degree that they are willing to share. As Peg pointed out, the chance to
tell stories does shift the group positively. Not everyone feels comfortable
speaking in a larger group. Even in a small group, there are often people
who don't feel comfortable sharing thoughts with everyone. I find when I
work with a small group, they often jump right in and skip the dyad step.
While there is still a positive effect, I really try to encourage people to
work through each step. I think the dyads support the transition from self,
to another to the group and readies people for the group work by giving
adequate time and space to engage. It pays attention to all learning
styles/personality types. Those who take a little bit longer to think things
through have a chance to catch up with the others and it levels the playing
field.
