Any Ideas on this one?

I have a led at least two OS events to help funders make decisions on
priorities for the distribution of monies for research. Both were with
regard to aspects of Cancer Research.

One event brought together 40 top researchers on a broad range of cancer
research, the other focused on Colorectal Cancer prevention and
research.

In both instances, the OS event included a day of OS (or two half-days)
plus convergence to identify what those in the room saw as the
priorities. Both had some input (1 hr or so) on the current state of
the research -- they wouldn't do it before.

Sure the researchers put forward their projects and themes and got into
good discussion and disagreement. But when it came down to saying what
were the top uses of research money at this time, some priorities
emerged.

In one case, I then met with the funding body including key people from
the foundations that would do the fund allocation. The were looking 3-5
years down the road. They were able to take the input from the
scientists and set their criteria for funding proposals that were to
come forward, or had come forward. They later did their ranking.

The scientists and advocates who came had not trouble participating in
the Open Spaces with clear givens. They learned from each other as well
as participated in priority setting even if their own research did not
end up on top.
