this is very cool, chris.  the three rules and then the ways that they are
done mathematically is interesting.  but the key that seems to be glossed
over is that these rules are applied to the 'boids' within some local
distance.  that i think is where the juice comes in... when we start making
the calculations based on *different* and *variable* views of what the
'local neighborhood' is.  adjusting to crowding and center and average
position gets more interesting, i think, when the 'boids' have different
sizes of neighborhood.  seems the one thing that flocks have in common is
that they are bounded by definition.  wish could let 'neighborhood'
(worldview) change sizes based on what is happening in the flock in
general...  like crowding increases so neighborhood shrinks a bit...  seems
more like what we deal with as humans and in open space... overlapping and
cross-flowing neighborhoods.
