OPEN SPACE CONFERENCE AT COSTA RICA



BACKGROUND:

On February 19th, 2000 Planet Club organized a workshop in Costa Rica.  In this
activity, there were participants from all the sectors: business, governmental,
academic and  NGOs. The aim of this workshop was to introduce Planet Club to
the participants. Another objective was to give them time to share with each
other the aim of the different organizations they were representing and their
experiences in working in the field of Sustainable Development.

At the end of the activity, we realized there was, basically, one concern
expressed by the majority of the participants: although all of them are working
for the same purpose, sustainable development, there is a lack of cooperation
between the organizations and between different sectors. One reason could be a
lack of communication.



PROPOSED ACTION:

Organize a three-day conference using an Open Space Technology for the
organizations of the different sectors (business, governmental, academic and
NGOs) that work  for  sustainable development. Open Space Technology
facilitates group discussion by allowing the issues to be discussed to emerge
from the group rather than a particular speaker. During this conference the
participants will have the opportunity to share concerns and work on finding
solutions. Open Space is very effective in facilitating this kind of work.



TARGET GROUP:

Organizations of the different sectors (business, governmental, academic and
NGOs) that work or have interest in the topic of sustainable development.


OBJECTIVES:

        Planet Club Objectives:
-       Open the local office in Costa Rica (First Planet office, besides the
one at Hungary)
-       Raise funds
-       Promote cultural exchange
-       Develop the skills of the international members
-       Improve understanding of sustainable development issues in Costa Rica
for international members
-       Organize the second activity in Costa Rica held by Planet
-       Develop local solution for global problems


Participants’ Objectives:
-       Open the local office in Costa Rica (First Planet office, besides the
one at Hungary)Unify efforts between sectors and within the organizations of
each sector
-       Build working relationships
-       Create a platform where the participants can share their concerns and
consider answers
-       Develop local solution for global problems
