I sent this note out to the Future Search list but thought someone on
this list might have some ideas also. Would love to hear from anyone
with any information or experience. -- Kenoli

An exciting project:

I am going with a team to do some FS work in Indonesia. My part is
going to be to supervise a team of 4 indonesian facilitators in Irian
Jaya. Many of you may know about Irian Jaya and some may not. There
are over 1000 distinct spoken languages among the tribes living in
the district. Many of these tribes have had little contact with the
outside world. It is the second largest rainforest in the world. It
is located on the other half of the island with Papua New Guinea. It
has been a center of civil conflict, some involving a large mineral
mine in the region. The project is sponsored by UNICEF and it's
intent is to nurture the capacity in the region to support and
protect women and children within the context of the increase
autonomy that has resulted from the recent civil struggles.

I am trying to find out as much about the region as I can and as much
as I can about doing this kind of work in a region where many
languages are spoken and where there is not really a common written
language. I would love to talk with people who have done FS in such
areas, particularly who have experience dealing with multiple
languages and illiteracy. Also folks that know about Irian Jaya,
about the politics of the region and about how the UN is perceived in
the region.

I look forward to talking with you soon. I am leaving in a week and
a half (or possible sooner).

Many thanks,

Kenoli
