I really love this conversation.
So, "whatever happens", does so under different conditions.  !?!

Whatever happens , said the little fox , and dipped his nose towards the
other little fox, into the picture - into the sparkling pond´s water.
It felt cool, and different, and the picture - had - changed.
There happened to be ripples around his nose,
spreading,
reflecting daylight and shadows.

What happened to the other little fox ?
