Open Virtual Organizations

Dear list members:
One can like Open Source Software because it is free. If it is free, one
doesn't have to pay for it, which is good ;-) especially when we think of
the expenses that an Organisation makes with paid expensive products.
But, the fact that Open Source Software is free, means also a more
solidarity way of dealing with other fellow humans. This is one side.
But, there is a second side that makes Open Source a really
interesting experience; and that is its way of "production".
How does a community of almost 1 million voluntary developers
organise herself? What type of structures? What type of rewards?
what type of voting? What type of learning?
A very comprehensive study has been publish in the number of
Fall 2000 of the Sloan Management Review (Vol 42, Number 1),
with the title "What makes a virtual organization work?"
From the Introduction:
"Today's workforce increasingly consists of de facto volunteers.
The Open-source software movement - propelled in large part by
volunteer programmers - suggests ways to motive and direct
knowledge workers".
