Diane, it sounds as if you're concerned that once on the web, the oslist is
more accessible to the public - to strangers.  Is that your concern?

If so, I think egroups needs to be clarified on that respect.  Egroups can be
set up to include only those invited.  The "membership" need be no different
than what you experience on oslist.   Egroups are as private as listserv's
unless one purposefully designs them to be public.

Does this address your concern?
