Birgitt, Without permutations, we would still be one celled organisms hanging out in a hot spring somewhere. It seems to me that evolution needs to have lots of experiments that don't work. Just as much so in the evolution of mind, and social systems as in biology. There is a bigger Open Space within which all our tiny ones take place. Joe
